I got a free old Gateway with a 333MHz Celeron. It's currently running W98 but I want to wipe the HD and start fresh. The processor speed is marginal for XP (233MHz required, 300 recommended). Should I just reinstall 98 and if so where do I get a CD of it?

I would be open to using Linux if someone could recommend a specific distribution and version.

Windows 98 is your best bet if you have 128MB RAM or better. any less, Linux would be better.

Windows 98 is no longer sold, but legitimate O/S Cd's are available cheap on eBay. If the case has a Win 98 Certificate of Authenticity stuck to the case, you could just burn a copy from someone, as you have the legal right to use it in that case.

Linux is open source and can be downloaded for free, or purchased in easier to use packaged formats. Do some reading up and make sure you can find drivers for your hardware before installing Linux.

Cheers :-)

Linux sucks. Try Windows Me or 2000.

Try Damn Small Linux or Knoppix, the poor man configuration (i.e., install on hard drive).

If you have it,2000 Pro should run just fine on it, but i would suggest having at least 512MB of RAM. Win98 is probably your best bet.
