There's no legal definition. I have 4 names (two middle names). My son has 2 middle names and 2 last names (not hyphenated).

The real issue is how many names do you expect a small child to learn? There is a point where parents can put unreasonable burdens on their children.

Depends on how long you want their signature to be.
I had an uncle that passed away. He had 4 middle names.
