how do i shoot pool with a non flat stroke?

when i had a few people watch me shoot they said i shoot pool really flat and i have to add spin/english to the ball or it backspins. how would i go about to correct this?

This is a common misconception about pool. Many people believe that the excessive use of English is synonymous with advanced level pool. English is often overused and abused. It's definitely something that you need to master to be a complete player. However, once you do, you'll realize how rarely you really need to use it.
