My shepherd/husky has been acting very wierd lately by destroying full bags of dog food, pushing the food in his dog bowl all over the garage where he sleeps at night, shaking, and whining after he comes in for the night. This was never a problem before but in addition to that, we have a 1yr old.

Does any of this have to do with his age or his breed and can anyone offer suggestions. I can't leave him or our beagle/cocker spanial in the house alone because they are lifting their leg on the carpet and with a new baby in the house, I don't want her to come in contact with it and touch her toys, put fingers in her mouth etc..... I am so scared that this will not go away and would have to consider putting him down for fear that he could hurt himself another way.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions - he really is a beautiful and loving dog.

Thank you to the seven people who responded, please note that I would never put a dog down for just any reason and would get many 2nd opinions before doing so. Both of my dogs were rescued from other owners and this one would have been put down if we didn't adopt him. I am an animal lover - I have rescued a baby squirrel and got nipped in the process of doing it. When dogs are loose in the neighborhood, I take them in and try to get in touch with the owners. Our baby just adores him and loves to play with him.

Thanks for your suggestions - I will take them all into consideration.

I had something similar happen with my Chow, she was a great dog and suddenly her behavior changed and when I would leave she would chew the window sills and scratch the door, all of which she had never done in the past. I took her to a vet my friend used since mine had recently retired, she said my dog was suffering from separation anxiety, but I didnt trust her. I went to get a second opinion and as it turned out she had a huge inoperable brain tumor and I had to put her down, it was horrible. I hope that this is not the case with your dog but I would consult a Vet.

DO NOT put your dog down just because of this, that is a ridiculous reason to put a dog down!!! i dont care how old he is. there are plenty of agencies that would be willing to adopt your dog out to a good home. your dog is probably suffering from the new baby in your home, but you should really consult with your vet, and in the mean time dont even think about putting your dog down, look for some adoption agencies in your area instead.

first use vinigar and water to clean up pee marks....did they always lift legs in house..before baby?it they didn't its a behavior problem that needs to be fixed. if putting them in the garage started when baby came or right after it becomes baby = me out..if the dogs are peeing on things of babys and taking babys things its not an age problem....its a u problem... and i mean that in a nice way....get a trainer/behaviorist to help u....
good luck hope u don't have to put her down...

Your dog sounds like he is really, really bored. Take him on more walks, so he is more entertained. If that doesn't work, try obedience lessons. Other than that punish him if you catch him doing something at that moment, and reward him for being good.

geez you should never, ever, put a dog "down" for a reason like that..if he is too much for you to handle right now, consider putting him up for adoption and giving him a new loving home..never ever put him down that's just silly.

All of those behaviors are symptoms of stress. I am thinking he is in pain..He needs a trip to the vet to see what is wrong..

sounds like he is jealous of the new baby and is misbehaving to get attention.
