The answer is no. When storing the card, keep it in the case it came in. Format the card at least every 3rd time you dump your pictures, don't just erase card. Keep the card dry, and don't drop it on a hard surface, because it can damage it. I've had the same CF Cards for 7 yrs.

One common way to have problems with camera memory cards is to format them with the pc.

Always, always, format the memory card in the camera! Do in on a regular basis.

It shouldn't make a difference, but it does.

I actually asked this question of Popular Photography a couple of years ago and their answer was no. When they fail, they tend to outright fail instead of fading away.
