I'd say putting 1000-2000 is good down payment. First I'd look over the body and check out if there are any dents and dings and look to see if the car has been repainted in any places. You can spot them out by looking for dirt nibs, mismatched color, and/or tape lines. Look under the hood for oil leaks and other things that might look unusual. Look for stains or other abuse inside the vehicle. A big stain could mean that the person who owned it before was careless and didn't keep good car of it. A scratched up or clawed dash could mean that an animal was transported with them from time to time. Another thing before you buy, do some research on the model of vehicle you are interested in. Take the extra time and try to find the best deal for your budget.

Its time to do some homework and if you do your homework youll save big $ and get something youll be happier with.

Figure out the kind of features you want in a vehicle...want a car, suv, truck? mileage? dependability? typical repair cost? You can find answers to these kinds of questions on the internet or Edmunds.

It would be great if you can buy your car in cash. If not, get "pre-qualified" for a car loan...Shop for interest rates - percent needed down, late fees, etc, etc.

If you can get approved for a loan, most dealerships can get you approved with no money down. Sometimes if you have no credit history, they may want a percentage of the overall price ( such as10% down). It, of course, also helps to have $$$ down if you want to keep your payments in a certain range.

I reccomend buying usedfrom a rental car company. They take good care of their cars and will not sell you one that has been junked up. Most of their cars are newer models, and you can get a really nice price, cheaper than most dealerships, and you dont hav eto sit and argue with salesman, because their prices are usually set. Try www.enterprisecarsales.com for example...

Hope that helps!
