i have a mtn bike where the rims are bent pretty good. is there anyway to straighten them out?

It depends what you mean by "bent".

If they are out of round or wobbly (out of true) then it might be possible for a mechanic to correct them for a reasonable price. If they are kinked or dented then, again, it is sometimes possible to correct it but they won't be as reliable as they once were.

agree, better to buy a new rim and build the wheel than to straighten out a really bent rim $wise and have to true it out once you go over that next bunny hop

Pretzel rims may not be repaired and can cause you to endo or worst, CRASH, while riding rough terrain---the new rims will guarantee your safety while hammering----

You could, but in order to get them true again you'll end up spending more money them it would cost to simply replace them.
