i LOVE tattoos, as long as they are a personal statement that actually MEANS something to you...i have 2 of them, i got both in one sitting...it actually didn't hurt that bad and one of them actually felt good...i have a shooting star on my left shoulder, right above my bicep and i have a faerie, melting into an asterisk on my right side. i like that i can cover them up if i need to, and that i can show them off easily if i want as well.
(i copied the next little blurb from my livejournal...i posted it the day after i got them)
i wanted something beautiful, but that also had a personal meaning...the faerie was something that i had drawn for probably 5 years before i even thought about tattoos, and to me its a symbol of freedom and a reminder to always be myself, be my crazy, free spirited wacko...no matter what anyone says or does.
its also a reminder to push myself and go as far as i can, because i know that i can do it...im a unique and powerful individual, i just have to remember that.
also, it sounds kinda lame, but the faerie is melting into an asterisk, the red hot chili peppers symbol. i know, i know...they're just a band...but to me they're sooooooo much more. going to one of thier shows a few years back was like a religious experience for me, and i wanted to show my love for them in a discreet way that most people wouldnt get at first glance.
the star, 3 of my best friends have it as well, but in different colors. aside from the bond between us, that to me is a symbol to always remember where i came from and to stay modest, no mater what i accomplish, because at one point i thought i was a nobody....and my friends were there for me and loved me no matter what.
Whew.....i kinda got carried away. sorry? hahahah

Yes I have tattoos, and I love them all, I also do Tattoos, people get them for many reasons, for example, they could mean something about the person or mean something deeper like a simple memorial tattoo with no Writing to it, Religious Reasons, or a something you truly love...they could also get them in a spur of the moment kinda deal which isn't always the smartest idea...you should always take to time to think about what you are going to get or whether it take months or years, it should be a well thought out thing. Remember it is permanent...I have 8 tattoos all of which are hidden on my body from plain sight. I have a Tiger and a Dragon Fighting around my ankle, a butterfly on my shoulder blade, a heart with wings and flames on the small of my back, a tiger head with tribal behind it. and two others, all of which I do not regret. And when someone comes to me and wants a tattoo, I make sure that they are sure that is what they want, and have no second thoughts....So i would say I don't know what the tattoo is or the reasoning for it but now you have my opinion. :) good Luck!

I always wanted a tatty, my whole life. What I'd really LOVE is full sleeves. But since I am a hair stylist going Medical, I guess that wouldn't be appropriate. My tattoo is in middle of my back in between my shoulder blades. It is a tatty of a snake and fire, both forming a diamond shape, which symbolizes the year and the month I was born in. It is totally original and I have the choice of showing it or hiding it. I personally hate the tatty right about the butt crack, this is what I like to refer to as a porn star tattoo! I've had mine for 10ish years and I do not regret it one tiny bit. I cannot wait to have another. But the first one took a long time to think of. Be very sure before picking a tatty as they are both expense to get and expense to remove.

I have one tatoo. It's a flower on the top of my foot and I didn't get it until I was almost 30. I don't regret it at all.
Story behind my tatoo:
I moved across the country and my mother and grandmother came along to keep me company on the drive. 3 generations together for 20 hours will leave you with a lot of memories! To commemorate our endevor, once I arrived at my new home all three of us went and got tatoos - including my grandmother. She was the first one on the table!

why are you having mixed feelings about your "friend"s tattoo? that's their decision.
i love tattoos. i think that they are an expression of the person, and if someone doesn't like them, they just need to keep their trap shut.
i have a tribal sun with a scorpion inside it on my right ankle. i got it 6 years ago, and never regretted it once. i have more ideas planned, like big wings, and a domino with wings for my grandma.
a person should only get one if they have something that they know that they want on their body for the rest of their life. if you choose a cartoon character or something childish, you need to either live with it, because it had something to do with your past, or get it covered up. i believe that every tattoo has something important to say, even if it's "i was a drunken fool" at that time in your life.
as long as your friend has thought long and hard and is over 18, i say let them do it. you might want to go with them and see the experience yourself. you might end up getting one, too.

I have a tattoo. It is a small "let it be", as in the Beatles song. I got it because I'm a huge beatles fan and the phrase means a lot to me. I think thats why a lot of people get tattoos, because they have something meaningful that they want to have with them forever. Forever is the key word. I think thats why a lot of people regret tattoos, because its something that means something to them when they get it, but then they get older, and they don't like it any more.
Mine is on the front of my hip, right below my pantsline, beneath my underwear. I got it here so its private, and the only people who see it are the ones i want to show. One of my best friends is extremely against tattoos, and heres why. He is Jewish, and you cannot be buried in a Jewish cemetary if you are tattooed. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the Holocaust, and how the prisoners in concentration camps were tattooed against their will.
So, in my opinion, if you know what you want and you know you won't regret it, tattoos are cool. They allow you to express yourself. I can understand people not liking tattoos because it scars your body, impurifies it and whatnot. Its a personal choice. I hope I helped you form your opinion. If you decide you are against tattoos, don't preach to your friend. I know from experience, its pretty upsetting when somebody tells you they don't like your tattoo.
tell your friend good luck!!

Tattoos are just another way for a person to express themselves. It is a very serious decision though because it is irreversible. The person should try to think about how they will feel about the ta too 30 years down the line. Would they be ashamed to show it to their kids? If not then they should definitely do what they want to express themselves.

I think Tattoos are great I got one at 18yrs old and my mother (who has 5 tattoos herself) said not to get one so early- well i had a freind make an original designe and I put it in a place that only people can see when I want them too...and its great -no regrets. My second tat I got 3 years later...same again a freind designed it and again I'm happy. All my tattoos mean something to me and I put them in places that are good for me- I can cover them when I want to and show them off when I'm not at work.

I think everyone feels differently about tattoos. I only have one. I thought I would want a million more as soon as I got my first one. But honestly I just want a couple more. My suggestion is if you are going to get a tattoo, then you should get one in a place thats not always shown (ie your back,shoulderblade,stomach,etc..) and see how you feel about it. If you were meant to have tattoos you'll definatly know after your first one.
Oh mine is on my right shoulderblade. Its a butterfly with my sons nickname.

tattoos are not for everybody.
tattoos are definitely for me. i have them, i love them and i want more of them.
different people get tattoos for different reasons. i got mine because i have always been fascinated by them and now i have a real appreciation for the art that is involved in them.
i have a tattoo of a koi swimming up a waterfall with lotus flowers (my profile picture) and am currently converting it into a full backpiece which will include more lotus flowers, lava rocks and a sea turtle.
i have a memorial tattoo of a skull on my foot
and i have a korean takeout box with a fortune cookie on my other foot.
i do not regret any of my tattoos.
