I'm talking about long-term, how has your tattoo affected you?

All three of my tattoos are in places that if I wear a polo shirt and jeans, they can't be seen. I like having them and I think they look good.

I don't like neck, face or hand tattoos though.

You can donate blood and organs after having a tattoo done. I have done so. You do have to wait a year to donate blood, but that's no big deal.

It is a serious decision to make since it's permanent. Even laser removal leaves a scar. I decided when I was 15 that I wanted a tattoo. I waited until I was 100% sure, at 30 years old, to get my first one. Now I'm addicted and I get one when I can afford it. Having two kids means I can't afford them right now.

The problem with most tattoos is people who get them while young usually aren't thinking about the long term. I applaud you for considering the future effects. Keep in mind your value system and goals may be vastly different only 5 years in the future however that tattoo will be exactly the same. One future problem is there are a number of people who are turned off by and or make negative personal assessments based on tattoos. A tattoo could be a real hassle in this case.

My opinion: Get a temporary tattoo for now if you have to. If you still want a permanent tattoo, make sure it is not normally visible.

Tattoos have become very mainstream these days. When one more generation grows to adulthood, nobody will even bat an eye at tattoos. They used to be edgy and symbolic of toughness or whatever, but now people get them at the drop of a hat. I have a small one from college and rarely think about it. As it is usually out of sight, it is mostly out of mind. I don't expect it will ever affect my life, except to serve as a nice memory of a certain time in my life.

None of my tattoos have effected me. I am 40, professional, chronically employed (I wish I could be jobless and rest up!), tattoos on my back, chest and left arm. None of them have ever elicited a negative reaction except from people who are incapible of any other reaction to a body modification.

Sure, when you're 80 you'll sag a bit. So what? My only advice is to be sure the tattoo you're selecting is not something that is going to lose meaining over time (Bands, movies, celebrities), and if you're going for shocking, make sure you can cover it up, because eventaully you will need to......

Tattoo's are awesome! I don't know what one of your commentor's meant about not being able to donate blood. I do and I have a tattoo that is visible (so it's not like I'm hiding it from the blood bank).

i do not see a difference between guys and girls having tattoos. i don't think that there are masculine and feminie placements for tattoos (some people think that arms look manly and backs look girly). i love tattoos that are well done and well thought out. i don't like tattoos that are crappy and generic.

I have four of them and they all can be covered if I want to cover them. They've had no affect on me. And yes you can still donate blood as long as your tattoo is not brand new.
