This may sound like a stupid question, but I just would like some
sensible opinions because I don't want to put my pet through
unnecessary pain.

Most dogs are pretty stoic about pain compared to birthing women. I've never seen a screaming or howling dog, mostly they wimper or whine now and then, they do appear very restless and uncomfortable with some nervousness mixed in. They get more aggitated if there are complications such as puppy is too big to come out, they will cry a bit more, but I can't say in all the births I've witnessed that I could ever compare it to a womans birth. I thought I'd literally die, and if dogs are feeling the same way, then wow they hide it well. I wish I could have been as graceful and humble as a dog when I had my son.

One of ours delivers so easily she can practically do it in secret (she yelped one time for her third pup during her first litter). The other girl was much more difficult: labor for twenty-four hours over one pup.

It's not any more unbareable for her than it is for a human if the mother is healthy and has no reason to be delivering puppies that are too big for her to pass but you might end up crying over the confused, anxious look on her face.

My dog (now has passed on) was screaming when she had her pups I even had to help with a few getting them out all the way or help with the pockets that they come out in usually the dog will eat them off or they are out of them warm them if they are not breathing , make sure she is in a comfortable place its a learning experience

Im sure she experiences some pain as do all creatures who give birth but she will soon forget about the pain when she is caring for the beautiful puppies. Im sure her pain is not excrusiating though it is in animal nature to reproduce she knows exactly what to do its her instinct just make her as comfortable as possible and give her space call your vet tommarow or monday for a follow up visit for her and babies. heres some helpful websites
