If you are in Australia it is most likely a Musk Lorikeet http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musk_Lorikeet or a Little Lorikeet http://www.birdsnways.com/mowen/little.htm. If not, the following link is the most comprehensive link I have found for parrots around the world. It's called the Lexicon of Parrots http://www.arndt-verlag.com/index.html

well it could be any number of things! first off, why did you get a bird that you didnt know what it is, silly!

ok. it the bird is smallish, about 8-11 inches with a WHITE beak, its a conure.
as for the patches, it there are only a tiny bit of them, its a red fronted. if the patches cover his eyes and the top of his head, its a mitred. if the patches arent really patches and more like a little red hood, its a cherry headed.

if the bird is large, bird but smaller than a macaw, and has a yellow or whiteish beak, its either a mexican red headed amazon or a red lored amazon

if its friggin huge with a black beak, its a red fronted macaw.

good luck! try to pair up the pictures of these birds online with your bird, that should be easiest.

not unless you email/post a picture that shows color and relative size. There are a lot of green parrots with red patches on their heads.
