There's a huge number of them flying for most US carriers and proved to be a very successful airliner, Why it didn't achieve similar success outside the USA?

You're right. Looks like the Airbus 321 was a good and worthy competitor.

I have a hunch many European airlines bought it, because of Airbus's presence in Europe.

Even been on one? I like to think of it as a twin engine 707.

757 is the best performing commercial jetliner ( IE very high powered ) aircraft with the best safety record. It is so good, AIRBUS took one apart and studied all the engineering that went into it. That being said - it was Mercedes priced in a Toyota Corolla market - it was about 15-25 million more than the 737 and the artificially priced A320. Further, it was a single aisle narrow body that came in very long lengths - which means it was not profitable to airlines when it came to embarking, disembarking & cleaning crew access - it could not be turned around in 15 minutes like a 737 OR A320. Therefore - it became a great charter aircraft - lots of range & no body cared about turn times..but you need to be able to sell more than just charter aircrafts to keep production open. Also, the 737-800 & -900 grew into the 757 & 767 for that matters markets - the 737 is very profitable b/c boeing can build them cheaper b/c they have had 30 years to optimize the production.

Well, you need to remember that the 757 is now out of production at Boeing. Just about every USA airline owns some, so your right about it being a success in America. In Europe, I know British Airways owns some, but other than that it wasnt much of a hit. The reason for this is that Airbus, being run by the governments of Europe, did not want to have Boeings flying over the Atlantic to the USA and all over the place when they had a similar aircraft. They knew it wasnt as good as the Boeing so they made them dirt cheap to the European Airlines. Why do you think you wont see an A321 flying for a US airline?

I notice that most answers have a bias toward boeing. Could this be the same Boeing which put Convair out of buisiness. Did deals with lockheed and had massive government contracts ie KC135 B52 which allowed them to undercut prices below cost for many years so as to almost monopolise the industry . Is It any wonder that when an alternative is available airlines look there.

Boeing is an American company and has for a long time been the forerunner in the latest in America. airbus is a European company and is used the most in European countries. i think is just a matter of countries using the manufacture that is located in there country. which would help decrease the cost the airline has to pay for import and export.

The B757 isn't the most endearing of aircraft and both Airbus and Boeing have better aircraft on offer.
