There's this girl who seems to like me, talks to me, smiles, and so on, but I don't like her (nothing personal, I don't dislike her, just not attracted). How can I let her know this without giving her pain (knowing from experience how it can feel), also without making a fool of myself just in case I'm misreading the signs?

Smiling & talking - no harm there, she is just being friendly
Ask her does she fancy you, clear the air, it is better to know than left guessing! because once you start suspecting and being suspicious (of her) that she fancies you, you may appear to be unfriendly, and if she thinks of you only as a friend she may get offended and upset that you are rejecting her as a friend, because friendship is important to girls. It would be difficult for her, if you act suspicious and act like she is weird, or keeping your distance, you may appear a little odd, and may make her feel awkward, or embarrassed as she is probably wondering what you are thinking of her, especially if she thinks of you as a friend.
If you still suspect her, she'll understand if you:
Tell her you're busy, avoid her, ignore her, don't make eye contact, insult her gently,
when she smiles, frown and look angry, look disgusted
tell her you cant talk because your meeting another girl for lunch

Incase you are leading her on or misleading the signs - I would give her a wide berth for a week or so - in a nice way. Relationships do not have to form because of being invited to smile etc.,

Just don't lead her on. Let her know through your actions that you're not attracted to her, and try to make it obvious so she will understand that you don't like her the same way she likes you... But DON'T be mean. The last thing you want to do is be mean to a girl.

There's never a best way of telling anyone this.they're gonna be crushed.there's no pain like being told someone doesn't like you anymore.all you can do is be a friend & let her down gently.no big scene, no drama - just tell her the truth & hope you remain friends.she will thank you for it eventually.

wow, thats a hard one. just be gentle cuz im a girl and i kno how it feels to get crushed... its not fun. try letting her down easy and giving her subtle signs like mentioning other girls but in an easy way so that she does not feel pressured.

Talk about this amazing girl you met at ********* last week, tell her you're going to meet this girl. etc. she should get the message without anyone having to loose face.
