And don't tell me God is eternal and has always been around. Everything has a beginning. If there is a God, he is not exempt from having a beginning. So you see, it's a paradox....
If you want to say that God has always been around, then I want to tell you that something else has always been around (for instance, biochemical pathways, DNA and RNA machinery, or any biological process really).
This question really is more for religious people to answer. I'm sure I will not find a single satisfactory answer to this question.

skion06..I like your answer...and agree with you. Nevermind the fact that by creating this God (ever so selfishly), that they would be causing the deaths of thousands of innocent people just so they won't feel so alone.

How can any of you make such strong statements about something with which you have never seen, never touched, never even COMMUNICATED with (and gotten an answer). You can't. If someone started talking to an imaginary being on the street, people would think that person is crazy. However, if you say you are talking to God...people are ok with that. It's delusional. It's RIDICULOUS.
For those who believe I am "condemned to hell" for even ASKING a question: "God" is not making any of you better people; that is for sure. Most of you are nasty, vile human beings who will condemn someone for having differing beliefs from you. Shame on you.

They're just going to tell you that he's eternal. They're going to let God be the mysterious & convenient "exception".

At the beginning of the human appearance on Earth, tribes would call anything god: the rain, thunder, snow, a big bear, etc.
As small communities formed, the weakest or oldest member would spin yarns about the power and fear of a God (remember still that they called many things gods).
Then the more advanced communities (different ages for different continents) started worshipping their Gods: think Aztecs, Hinduism, Buddhism (they worship Nirvana- a state of spiritual enlightenment), Jews, Muslims, etc.
Then the writing began! ALL books about god were written by MAN- whether they said it was the word of God or not!
So, as you can see, it is human nature to believe in the supernatural. It's just that some beliefs are more economical than others. Christianity was the first to make it such a lucrative business.
In conclusion, the concept of "god" has been around since the beginning of time. And whether there is a god or not is up to personal experiences, feelings and thoughts. He can not be proved to exist nor proved to inexist. What can be proven is the fultility of religion, AKA: BLIND faith.

Matt the Strong gave a better answer than I could, but I'll still chime in with my two cents. You say everything has a beginning. How do you know that? Is it fair to call God a "thing"? Time and space are aspects of the material world. the material world, according to current scientific theory, had a beginning. Why? Where was it before it began? It just happened? That's no harder to believe than that God exists in some eternal realm outside of space and time.
You seem to think your question is clever, pointing out some obvious fallacy to ignoramuses, but there have always been many people as intelligent as any others who believe that God exists and is eternal.
Scientific theory will certainly not tell you that DNA and RNA have always been around. Where did you ever get that idea?
Wow, now that I've taken a bigger look around, I see a lot of really good responses here besides Matt's. Thanks, many of you, for such great answers.

using your human logical and scientific knowledge, every thing has a beginning. Then if the big bang theory is true, where did those tiny atoms come from and what were the chances that they would meet in the vast space out there?
God is the Alpha and Omega. Meaning beginning and end. Meaning He has always been here and always will be. Jesus told us this about God.
Fathom that God is all-powerful, almighty, is ineffable. Just being God makes it possible to be able to do anything and be anything. Thus it's possible for Him to have always existed. That's what makes Him God. A spirit, not a being or a body.
If you are sure you will not find a single answer that will satisfy you, then why even bother asking. This proves that you are close-minded and not willing to listen to reason. May God have mercy on your soul. You will need it. But since you don't believe, then you will not receive it. Too bad.

Well the only 2 ways we can explain using human rationale is that either God had a beginning, or he didnt. It is true our minds cannot fathom the thought that God has always been and didnt have a beginning, but that doesnt mean its not true. So its a little hasty to dismiss the possibility simply because you dont understand how it could be possible.
The fact is not even believers have a solid answer to that but we will have the satisfaction of being with God for eternity to learn about such things.
So my Q for you is, what would be worse about being in hell, the punishment? Or the idea that all your Q's will go forever unanswered there?

God is and claims to be eternal which means things like "He is self-existing with no beginning or ending." God Almighty is the Creator, not the created. We are created, time is created, He is the Creator and not subject to such things, neither to us, nor to time. You cannot put God into this universe and cast Him as a creature. This universe is way too limited and again, He is not a creature (a created being). There is no reason to assume that He must be created, that is a rule which we see in this universe, of which He is greater than.
At the same time, God did chose to become the first of His creation in the form of His Son, Jesus Christ of whom and by Him all things were created. As Jesus Christ said, He is the first and the last of all things; for us, He is the beginning and the end. We cannot go beyond those bounds, but He can.
I think you are trying to put a river into a cup and demanding that it all fit in there. It won't fit, and you probably don't like that answer.

Life is amazing. We are just little babies starting to grapple with it ... To ask the ultimate questions - what a priviledge that we even have that capacity to contemplate mind boggling questions. We find that some things cannot be answered in one short lifetime. Someone has offered us an eternity of life to enjoy and grapple with hard questions - don't you want to be there? It's somewhat a gamble - but what's the alternative? The evidence is there that Jesus is real and was a serious being. What you do with His reality will mean all the difference in the world and the world to come.

Look, here is the difference between the two thoughts. People who do not believe in God must rely on natural processes. Therefore time applies to everything. Everything is governed by forces we can measure and understand. We believe God created all of those processes and laws, therefore since he is the source of them, he is not limited or governed by them. God is not just eternal, he created and also exists outside of the realm of time. His knowledge is perfect. He doesn't learn things as he goes along, He is a God who does not change because He is existing as the exact same being at all points in time. Therefore if time does apply to Him as it does us, it is not hard to see that he has no beginning. No one claimes dna or rna machinery has aways been around. To a person that believes all things are governed by nature's laws, there would have to be a starting point for them. So although in your eyes it would appear as a paradox, it is not for me. Just make sure you remember that your eyes are a little biased to see anything not governed by natural laws as inherently foolish or delusional. I will also concede that my eyes are biased as well. But if you look honestly at both notions of our origins, as either created or cosmic accident, it comes down to a personal preference on what to believe.

Ok, I'm a Christian, and I'll try to explain this whole "God is eternal" thing, as I will admit, it's hard to understand.
Everything that has a beginning has an end, and therefore, is subject to the physical anomaly humans have labeled as "time." Every physical being/creation, including our finite universe is subject to the effects of time, and therefore, has a beginning and an end. God is not constrained in physical time. If it helps, imagine a current of water, and then imagine you swimming outside the current. You are not affected by the rushing water, but anything inside of it will be swept along. In your question, you are comparing physical, time-bound things (DNA, RNA, etc) and God. These things can simply not be compared because God essentially "exists" outside the flow of physical time. Therefore, he has no beginning, and no end. RNA, DNA has not ALWAYS been around. It started with the flow of time (or a bit after) and therefore will end with the flow of time. God will never have a beginning or end, as he isn't governed by time.

It's amazing how some people try to bring God, creator of the Universe and all that's in it, down to our human level. Why not look around at nature and even the human body to see that A Supreme God obviously always WAS. The Holy Word of God said it with two words: "I AM" This is a matter of faith, that we as christians cannot Prove to you because it's beyond our finite minds that we admit to be a fact. God is so far superior to us limited humans, but the wonderful thing is, He's still within our reach!!! Don't let your limited human understanding get in the way of your relationship and love for your ETERNAL Maker. Look up to God, He's always looking down on you.

there was a BIG BANG and wham., there He was. He looked around and decided to create life so He could do what He does best, LOVE!!!!!! Next thing ya know, the earth starts filling up with call kinds of creatures but none are exactly what He wants. So he reaches down and makes a mud pile and blows life into it,WHAM, you have Adam. And so on and so forth.
So there ya have it, a beginning you wanted and needed. Lets face it, its no different than saying what the evolutionist say about how they got there start. They don't have an answer to satisfy anyone either.
God is, that's all there is to it. I have no idea how or why, I know that He is there because He told me so and I believe. I guess that makes me some-what like you atheist, you believe what someone told you. You don't KNOW for SURE, you TRUST your source, I trust mine too.
Guess that makes us about even (in the minds of logical people)
But not everyone is logical.
