Proactiv is awesome but if you're not chronic (meaning you don't actually 'have acne'), just wash your face every day and use witch hazel toner (gentle and doesn't dry your skin). I use "OCM" or the Oil Cleaning Method (look it up on a search, its wonderful). Also, as someone suggested, you can try using birth control pills although it might make you a little crazy in the head for a couple months until your body gets used to it.

If it's occasional and mild, I'd just use a salicylic wipe (like Oxy pads) or glycolic toner (Proactive has a glycolic toner, but you can get a different, even stronger kind) and a 2-5% benzoil peroxide cream (the same thing that's in the Proactive repairing lotion, but also in Oxy, Clearasil, and most other acne creams---read the ingredients list to see strength). I'd also use a light moisturizer, or an oil-free moisturizer with some jojoba oil added to it.

A lot of our skin issues can be avoided with proper skin care regimens. What many people don't know is that most soaps and cleansers on the market contain mineral oil, the molecular structure of which is too large to penetrate into the pores of our skin so it sits on the top layer like saran wrap. This causes dirt and debris to collect on our face, thus causing our skin problems. Most products contain ingredients such as alcohol, wax, dyes, chemicals, fragrances, etc which strip your skins acid mantel (its protective layer) and causes irritation, dryness, and more skin problems. One thing to remember is that you don't want to DRY out your face because your skin will try to overcompensate by producing more oil. You might want to try Arbonne. It's a Swiss company that is regulated by the FDA and formulates their products without the ingredients listed above. Their products are botanically based and beneficial for all skin types. They have skin care systems that are formulated to meet each person's specific needs. I would be happy to help you if you're open to giving it a try.

Queen Helene Mint Julep mask. Use it for at least 4 days in a row before you expect to see results, but it works. It does tend to dry your skin, however, so you should use a non-greasy moisturizer afterwards.
