Do you have any of your information? City, State, hospital you were born in? I put all the information I had on the Indiana birth registry. Both parties have to have their information on the registries in order for them to match you up. My birth mom added herself after I had been on about 10 years. So it took a little time, but we have been in contact (emailing and phone calls) and I just went out and met her, my birth sister and my brother this past October. So, whatever state you were born in, get on that registry and see what you can do. If you need any help or support, you can email me. I know everything you are feeling! I've been there!
After seeing the other messages, I have to add that my adoptive parents have always been supportive of me finding my birth family. Since you are 16, talk to them and have their support behind you because you don't know what is going to be found. I do have to say, my birth sister and I are like twins and she has a different father. It was so wonderful for me to find them. My brother and sister (from my adoptive family) always looked alike growing up and I always wondered if I looked like anyone and the first picture she emailed me brought tears to my eyes. We are great friends now and shares pics and emails. In fact when I went to meet my birth family I stayed with her for a week. We had a great time together.

Before you do, consider this ... what is a mother?
Your mother is the one that changed your diapers and sat up all night with you the night you had that horrible fever. She's the one that fretted over taking you to school that first day; she was the one in the bushes peeking in the window to be sure you were okay and didn't miss her. Your mother is the one who knows your secret likes and dislikes; she knows the status of your heart by the cleanliness of your hands. She's the one that knows everything about you and still thinks you are the most wonderful creature on the planet. She's the only one that really cares that much about your bowel movements and that weird pimple on your rear end lol.
Are you looking for someone with the same features as you? Then wait a few years and have a baby, I promise that will make it all the worthwhile (I'm adopted too, btw). I'd suggest not seeking your birth parents until your 18th b-day at least, then give it some more thought before doing it. Remember, she left you for a reason, and may not want that reason brought up again.

First let me respond the rude answer before mine, everyone has a birth certificate. However, if you are adopted your birth certificate only lists the adoptive parents, not the birth parents.
Now, my response to the original question. Depending on what state you are in your original birth certificate is probably a sealed document. The first thing I would advise you to do is discuss this with your adoptive parents. I was adopted at birth and I still do not know who my birth parents are. I wonder sometimes though, and have researched ways to attempt to locate them. The reason I suggest talking to your adoptive parents first is they probably can save you a lot of research and wasted time. They may know who your birth mother is and can help you truly find them.
I do not know your reasons for wanting to locate them, but I can tell you to be prepared for rejection or hurt feelings. You really need to know the reason for your adoption. I was always told growing up that I was a special child and was loved more than most because I had a family that went through hoops to adopt me. I did not believe them sometimes, but I know now they were telling the truth, and I do believe that children that are adopted have a true purpose in life.

what about the people who raised you? they have to know at least something. what about other family members? If you ever find out their name, go to the sites listed above.
Good Luck
