When my kids went there on a school trip ten years ago they were convinced & a little frightened by what happens when you make bad choices.

In fact one of the guys in there made a point of saying something like , "I'd better not see any of you in here, because it will make me angry...you won't like seeing me angry"

Melodramatic? Sure....but effective nonetheless!

If you mean "Scared Straight", the purpose is to let delinquent kids know what life is really like inside prisons and jails. The hope is that they will rethink their way of life and choose a better path before becoming another number in the system.

If you mean people going to visit inmates (such as family and friends), the purpose is to stay in touch and see them while they are incarcerated. Visitation is a privilege, not a right and if there are discipline problems with an inmate he can receive LOP (loss of privileges) as punishment. In most places this means no visitation, no commissary and such. In these instances visitation is a type of reward for good behavior in a way.

If I am understanding your question, you are referring to "Scared Straight". This is an intervention program developed to deter 1st time and youthful offenders. This program is a joint project involving the court system, parole agencies and department of corrections.

The program is a "last chance" attempt to deter persons from entering the penal system. I do not have numbers / stats to tell you if the program has been a suucess. Personally I have seen participants return at least once.

The inmates role is to convince the persons that prison and jail is not the place to be. The participants get a first hand look at life in prison. Inmates explain the consequences of a life of crime.
The inmates that play a role in this program are closely screened. Normally they have long sentences to serve, and by this time have become adjusted to prison life. Inmates are not compensated for their work in the program.
The inmates feel that this is their way of repaying society. It gives them a sense of responsibilty; that under normal circumstances would not have been able to do.

The participants normally spend an 8 hour day in the prison. They visit inmate housing units, workplaces, school facilities, segregation unit and dining hall. This is done under close supervision. The prison officers explain the strict rules inmates are subject to.

I personally do not feel that this program works. I feel that the prison system is not a deterrent for our youth. The society in general has a tendacy to glamorize prison life. Having worked in the system, There are too many privileges given to the inmate population...This is a whole new system that simply does not work.

It is to give the inmate some outside exposure. In many cases this helps them preserve or create motivation to get out without infractions or to just give a glimmer of hope in the dark tunnel they are currently in. It is very useful and needed to keep the inmates Psyche positive

Well as far as I knew it was called Scared Straight, I would think the intention is to scare people out of criminal behavior. The thing is, some will find it cool as opposed to frightening. The human mind is a mysterious thing.
