I used ancestory.com and the Latter day Saints site which provided some great findings. Do I need to search the actual country they came from to find dates beyond the early 1800's ??

Some Family History Centers have Scottish Parish Records on CD - data that isn't on-line. FHC's are in LDS churches and they are free to the public. Call yours and ask.

You should be able to find Scottish ancestors through the LDS site back to the 1600s through the Parish Records if they go back that far. Most of them do. Before the 1600s you may have to search any sites where graveyard inscriptions are recorded if they do go back further.

If you can't go there you can often do it through the mail and some online. You need to know what county and all but it can be done. Unfortunately, there are fees and it takes time.
