My fiancee has spontanious acne problems, sometimes its pretty good, and sometimes its really bad. She has tried proactiv, and other regular acne face washes and things of that nature, some things tend to help, but nothing is a solution, and she doesn't want to go to a dermatologist. are there are other suggestions besides regular cleansing and proactiv?

I am 25 and I have suffered from cystic acne, the most severe form, all of my life. Just a few weeks ago I found a posting on the internet about Pantothenic Acid, a form of vitamin B5. It said that you can take 10grams (20 500mg dosage pills a day) of vitamin b5 and it is supposed to cure the most severe of acne. Proactiv worked a little but not for the really painful swollen and embarassing ones. Anyway, I want you to know that I've been taking b5 for 5 weeks and my skin is clear!! I noticed a huge difference within a week. I won't act like I totally understand the way it works. The most I got from reading about it was that acne is a result of problems with fat metabolism and this vitamin helps with that. It also decreases oil production to your face and decreases your pore size.
Ok, here's how you do it: Go to GNC or the Vitamin Shoppe and get some Pantothenic acid aka B5 in the form of d-calcium pantothenate (only vitamin supplement shops will have it-drugs stores don't). For the first few days to a week gradually build up to 20 (500mg a piece) pills a day. Don't start out at 20 or it'll probably upset your stomach. The first few days I had a little bit of an upset stomach. It wasn't anything that kept me out of work or school. I'd just say it made me more "regular". You want to space out the pills so that a continuous supply is in your body. This is a water-soluble vitamin so any excess you will just pee out. Don't worry about it being such a large amount because since it is water soluble it is almost impossible to overdose on it. For two months take the 10 mg/day dosage. I'm bad with pills so I take 10 capsules and empty them into a glass and mix them with some diet soda (soda dissolves them best). I chug it because it is bitter and then chase it with some other soda or juice. I only do 10 with breakfast and 10 with dinner. I don't space it out like they say to do. After 2 months gradually take the dosage down by 1 mg (2 pills)/day less each week. A maintenance dose I think is something like 1-2 mg/day. Very doable. I am doing this along with my proactiv in the morning and night.
If your fiancee doesn't have severe acne she can use a lesser dosage. Some people only take 1-2 grams (2-4 pills)/day and see results. The higher the dosage, the quicker the results. If she mixes the capsules with a drink instead of taking the pills, I suggest the twinlab brand...it mixes and some other brands don't. I love this stuff...It was life changing for me. I went from hiding my face and having huge swollen acne to getting compliments from strangers on my beautiful glowing skin! In only a month! Also, if she takes the higher doses, she needs to take a b-complex vitamin once a day as well because large doses of pantothenic acid can make her deficient in other b-vitamins.

From what I know....

For reasons no one completely understands, follicles, often called pores, sometimes get blocked. Sebum (oil) which normally drains to the surface gets blocked and bacteria begins to grow. Both whiteheads and blackheads start out as a microcomedone.

There are two types of acne: (1) Non-inflammatory acne
(2) Inflammatory acne

(1) Non-inflammatory acne
Microcomedones become non-inflamed skin blemishes called comedones--either a whitehead or a blackhead:

Whitehead
When the trapped sebum and bacteria stay below the skin surface, a whitehead is formed. Whiteheads may show up as tiny white spots, or they may be so small that they are invisible to the naked eye.

Blackhead
A blackhead occurs when the trapped sebum and bacteria partially open to the surface. The spot turns black due to the skin's pigment, melanin, reacting with the oxygen in the air. This black spot is not dirt and can not be washed away. Blackheads can last for a long time because they are stable structures, allowing the pore's contents to very slowly drain to the surface.

A blackhead or whitehead can finally release its contents to the surface and heal. Or, the follicle wall can rupture and inflammatory acne can ensue . This rupture can be caused by random occurence or by picking or touching the skin. This is why it is important to leave acne prone skin relatively untouched.

(2) Inflammatory acne
Papule
When there is a break in the follicular wall, white blood cells rush in and create inflammation. A red bump called a papule ensues. Papules can be quite small, but can also be larger and tender. The papule may stay beneath the surface and ultimately heal, or it can become a pustule.

A pustule forms several days later when white blood cells make their way to the surface of the skin. This is what people usually refer to as a "zit" or a "pimple".

I Wash my face with green tea( no caffine.) It seems to help me.

An inflamed lesion can sometimes completely collapse or explode, severely inflaming the surrounding skin, and sometimes engulfing neighboring follicles. These lesions are called nodules or cysts:

Nodule
When a follicle breaks along the bottom, total collapse can occur, causing a large, inflamed nodule that can be sore to the touch.
Cyst
Sometimes a severe inflammatory reaction can result in very large pus filled cysts.

Good luck! And also some say popping a pimple can scar, others say it can't scar. I tend to think that lancing and gently squeezing pimples that are at the surface and white will usually not lead to scarring. However, trying to squeeze and pop a pimple which is still below the surface may lead to major problems.

Suggestions on how to pop a zit vary. Read through some of these opinions from around the internet and decide for yourself. If you have a serious cystic lesion, your dermatologist may have methods of reducing the swelling which may also help prevent scarring. Also, alpha hydroxy acid may help prevent a spot from becoming a behemoth in the first place.

Tip: follow the Dan Kern's Regimen to prevent future whiteheads from occurring.

(from iEmily.com)

Take a warm shower or bath to soften your skin.
Wash your face and remove all makeup.
Wash your hands to prevent spreading germs and infecting the pimple.
Sterilize a needle...(a dirty needle will cause an infection and maybe a bigger pimple).
Gently prick the tip of the pimple with the needle.
Take a clean tissue or piece of toilet paper and wrap it around your index fingers.
Gently apply pressure to the sides of the pimple to ease out the pus. Stop when blood or clear fluid comes out.

Still, popping maybe dangerous, so better safe than sorry!!!

Good luck again to all of you!!!!!!!

The only way is to go to a dermatologist, if the creams and washes arent working, then she needs to be prescribed medication that she will actually apply to her problem areas, and also supplement that with pills that will keep the type of hormones that cause acne to a minimum. But the only way is going to be if she just goes to a dermatologist. Its worth it and trust me if she is embarassed, just put the idea in her head. Eventually she will be more embarassed from the acne in public and will want to go to a dermatologist.

Sometimes the chemicals don't work so you just have to try it the natural way. There is dead skin cells and dirt on your pillow or whatever you sleep on, and if you sleep face down on that pillow you could be picking it back up and clogging up your pores in the process. Does she wash her face twice daily, that might help. And she might want to ease down on all the fat, and sweets if she can't get enough of that. Try that and stick to it and it will be very likely that her acne will go to a minimum and stay to a minimum.

I have had the same problem
I use a antibacterial face wash by clinique which can be bought at macy's and other department stores. She also needs to use an astringent, oil remover if her face is oily and better makeup like clinque or merle norman. I actually just saw a dermatoligist. She can also do at home microdermabrasion by neutrogena!
Good Luck!

Around here there is a Health Store that has a Doctor on staff.
Check for something like this in your area.
An idea or two from this guy has helped "every" time any one of my friends or myself has had any problem.
