As it's likely we'd be sent to Iraq or Afghanistan if drafted I'd choose the AK-47 due to the plentiul supply of ammunition and its sturdy construction. You can run it over with a truck and it will still fire. Plus it's easy to use. While not as accurate as the others it has better firepower. What we need in the current situation.
The SA80 clogs up with sand in desert conditions so I wouldn't use that.
The M16 is a good rifle but not as tough as a Kalashnikov.
As for the SLR, is it the Belgian assault rifle used before the SA80 was issued to the British army?

Top of the list - AK47 for ts rugged reliability. Its not the most accurate in the world but a rifle that is only 70% accurate but 100% reliable is better than a 100% accurate rifle that jams at the moment of truth....
Second is the SLR. These had been phased out when I joined up but we still had to train on them. Good accuracy and qood stopping power.
Third is the M16. Again pretty good accuracy and stopping power.
Last on the list is the SA80. Its a pile of rubbish and the most unreliable weapon i have ever used

It has to be between the age old rivals of the M16 and the AK47.

The AK due to it's simplicity, cost effectiveness and reliablity for those countries finding it neccessary to arm a large force reliably for as little as possible.

The M16 is quite simply the most versatile and user friendly assault rifle available. The rail system allows the customization of the rifle to fill the needs of an entire squad without the neccesity for a totall overhaul of the basic kit.

The SA80 is a solid platform and fairly portable to boot, but it's downfall is falling somewhere between the cost effectiveness of the AK47 and the flexibilty of the M16.

The SLR was a good rifle and the British army has not had a better replacement,I agree the SA 80 is a pile of mince but I would have an AK 47 as it can take a lot of punishment but still work.
The M16 just ask a Vietnam veteran about that pile of crap and how when they could would use captured AK 47s.

Ive only used the sa80 and SLW but i hear the m16 is way better first of all the cleaning is as easy as sh*t plus hardly any stoppages then the AK it can be used anywhere and in any condition but the accuracy i hear is a bit iffy

My Choice would be an M16A4 with CCO.

Kalshnikov series isnt conducive to accuracy. the sight radius is too small, the Safety catch makes inordinate noise when switching on, the muzzle climb is atrocious, and if fitted with an AK74 Muzzle break is blinding, plus deafening to any around you when firing. Lower hanguard been known to ignite during long bursts.

SLR(FN-FAL) while it has a heavy round, in UK service has no full-auto feature unless one puts a Match under the sear. Its Muzzle climb isnt as bad as an Kalash but still there, Back sight isnt windage adjustable, not really designed for use with Optical sights(mounting them on the cover isnt awe inspiring as a solid Picattinny mount.

SA80(L85A2) too many problems to start on......

M16A4- tried and true, straight line design negates muzzle rise better than any of the other choices. Has 3 shot burst(M16A3 version has Full) its M1913 Picattinny rail system allows easy mounting of Optics, lasers, torches, Grenade launchers, IR Laser dsg., etc. with an Aimpoint or EO Tech, ACOG sight its deadly in trained hands. Only mod that would be worthwhile is the HK 416 Piston Mod to it.

Strange to limit to those 4 very different weapons.
Is this an individual preference to use on a range? SLR/SA80
Lug about in the field? - SA80
Use in an open scenario, long range? SLR
Use in an urban scenario, FISH or COIN? - SA80
From a logistics point of view? - M16
Carrying in an armoured vehicle or aircraft? - SA80
Operate in harsh environments? - AK47
Give to untrained personnel? - AK47

Take your pick.

AK. For reasons already posted. Put a scope on an AK at it becomes a reasonably accurate weapon. I like big calibers so I am partial to the M1 Garand. The 30-'06 rifle round is a beast but you shoot someone with it and they stay down. Same with the .45 ACP.

Know the SLR ( FN ) if that is what you are referring to is a great stopper if you catch my drift.
What you hit goes down and stays down
Great for hunting animals also.

Prefer the old Lee Enfield .303 myself
