My dog has been fixed for more than a year. She had her period once, and then when it was over we had her fixed. Ever since we got her fixed she's been letting out some clear vaginal discharge that smells awful. She only does it when she is excited and only on certain things like her favorite couch, my car seats, and when she sees people pass by our front yard. I know it's not pee because I see her licking her her vaginal area after the discharge. Is this normal? I have a smaller dog, and she doesn't do this. I just thought maybe it's a big dog issue. Anyone else experience this with their female dogs?

She has a low level yeast infection. Give her 2 acidophlilus capsules a day for a week, then 1 capsule a day for another week.
You can find them at a pharmacy or a health food store. It will be labelled "lactobacillus acidophilus", which are good bacteria that we need for our immune systems. We need enough of them in our system to balance the yeast, if there aren't enough, the yeast gets out of control. That is what causes the smell.
If this is a regular thing with her, I would give her a capsule every day anyway. Good for her immune system. Or if she likes yoghurt, give her some of that every day, it contains the active bacillus.

They can still get a yeast infection, they have to be treated with antibiotics and douches oh yes....you have read this correctly...I know....I had...a female we had spayed and that is what happened to her. My sister and I laugh about it often.....it was not easy having to give a 80lb Labrador a douche every day for a week.....:)

Are you sure the smell is not coming from her anal glands? It will smell fishy (or so I am told) and she may need to get her glands expressed (super gross).
