It seems usually when kids say "I'm too old to be spanked" it is considered as an indication that we are not! To be sure, we don't LIKE to be spanked! I know that philosophically many now believe spanking is wrong; but are there OTHER reasons?

Spanking might help with a toddler but after a certain age spanking is just not an effective deterant to misbehavior. Other methods are more effect. A spanking lasts seconds, taking the TV away form the child can make them think for an hour or a day or a week about what they did. Take the car keys from your 17 year old or spank her, take the ipod or spank him? You tell me.

I was seventeen last time I was spanked (with a belt). My mom said I was never to old for a spanking.

Because if there is no great reason towards the spanking then remorse towards the individual hitting the child will grow, &if this is a punishment for any level of bad behavoir there will be resentment in the later years of their life i.e parents when they are older and upon their children if they do not forgive their parents. It should be a form to show their child that they are trying to teach them a small lesson to avoid getting hurt or come in contact with danger not for anything that pisses a parent/guardian off. Spanking also hurts? Unless talking doesnt get through and they repeat the behavior once again...then a small punishment at their age level would be required.

I know many concrete reasons spanking is wrong ("other reasons to NOT spank"):
It doesn't actually teach lessons (it isn't a deterrent). It may stop a child for the time being, but the child doesn't learn that the behavior was wrong.
It does teach the child that hitting is OK.
It is never OK to hit anyone, but particularly anyone younger than you and smaller than you and vulnerable.
Spanking injures a child's self-esteem. It is emotional abuse as well as physical abuse.
Shame on all of you who think that spanking is OK against everything every psychologist and psychiatrist has written. You should never hit anyone, but especially never hit someone who is vulnerable to you and relies on you for everything--it is the ultimate betrayal.
None of the above is philosophical, it is concrete.
Also, to stdsareb (last one)--it doesn't sound crazy, it sounds perverted for your father to lay you over his knee and spank you at 32 yrs of age. It sounds really perverted at 15 years of age and it sounds the most perverted of all at 3 years of age. How could anyone want to do this?
I understand that you think I need to chill. And I think spanking is child abuse. If you saw someone cutting a child with knives in a parking lot would you be offended? Well, that's basically how I feel about spanking--and I can't "chill" about that.
However much you want to convince yourselves that spanking is right, spanking is wrong.
And I don't know why y'all who approve of spanking get so defensive about it--perhaps it is the spankers who need to chill--in more ways than one.

I just never thought a whack on the butt did any good...
If my kids picked up something they weren't supposed to, then I swatted that hand and said no... they learned that THAT was the issue. How would a whack on the butt going t teach them not to pick up something????
I never got that.
If it was really, really bad..... I took something they really enjoyed away for a bit.. That had a bigger impact..... not getting to go to my daughter's friend's roller skating party when she was 5......... it was the end of the world!
She never used her skates in the street again.

When reason fails, when they absolutely will not listen, when they won't stop, when nothing else works, then I will spank. It's a last resort. If you threaten to take their TV away, do it. If they act like they don't care, they will, eventually, when they've lost enough privileges.

I am not sure, I am 32 years old and I know if I was disrespectful to my dad he would still take me over his knee. LOL As crazy as that sounds.
