It's a behavior passed down from before domestic canines. They are crushing the leaves and twigs that make up their bedding to create a cozy resting site. That's also why some dogs dig at the carpet or muss up their beds/blankets.

Not sure, but always thought it was some kind of instinct to trample down leaves and grass to make a bed, and you notice they always curl up then (warmth). I know your dog is doing that in the house and no leaves/grass in house, but like I said, instinct, from when dogs were wild and made beds in leaves and grass. Here is something I find interesting, my dog many times uses pillows just as a person would, never saw a dog do that before.

I have heard that this is instinctive behavior passed on from when the wild canine would want to make sure that it was going to sleep with the wind blowing into its face so it could be alert to the scent of danger. It turns a few times to make sure it is facing in the right direction.

This is a nesting impulse that some dogs have. They are trying to find the most comfortable and safe spot to lay in.

that's an instinct surpassed down from their wolf ancestors to variety of melt the floor until now they lay down. handing over circles could help push down leaves and branches to make a extra gentle mattress.

it is a natural instinct. dogs used to be wild animals who lived in... (drum roll) ... the wild. in order to be sure they are safe they circle before bed to scan their area for potential threats.

goes back to their wolf ancestory. they keep turning to pat down heir bedding and make it comfy. much like plumping our pillows or getting in to that good comfy position when we go to sleep.
