When a cat swishes is tail back and forth, it is a sign that he is on "high alert" mode - especially when he is looking at a potential prey. When he is laying down and you are petting him and he swishes his tail back and forth, he is agitated or irritated... so, nack off - he'll scratch.

Cats lash their tails back and forth when they are angry, but also when they are very tense and interested in something they think is cool. He's just thinking "Boy, I'd like to get my paws on that bird!"

It's a very natural reflex. That is prey and predator. The tail flips and the butt shifts into a stalking mode. Nothing to be concerned about. Just another cat thing. That's what they do.

The tail moves because that shows that he is interested or mad at the bird so keep him indoors or.....the poor bird

Basically, kitty wants birdy. He'll also do it to a flashlight spot on the wall if he is feeling frisky. Just a sign of wanting to play.

Because they are getting excited and wants to go outside and chase it they also twitch their tail if they get mad
