I rent a large basement room that I am going to share with my baby when she's born. Would I still qualify for head of household, or do I have to the own property? I'm very confused by the term, and I don't want to file incorrectly next year. What does head of household encompass? Is it just the amount you pay for housing/utilites/etc., or does it include other expenses?

If you have a qualifying dependent, you can claim HoH. You could be living on the streets or in a homeless shelter, your filing status does not depend upon where you live or whether you own property or not.

Head of Household is just the name for the filing status for single parents. You get a larger standard deduction and have lower tax rates than a single person so you pay a bit less tax. As long as you provide a home for a qualifying dependent -- your baby once it is born would be a qualifying dependend -- you can claim HoH filing status. It has nothing to do with the amount of your rent or utilities.

Since your baby isn't born yet, you can't file HoH for 2006. You will be able to file HoH on your 2007 tax return next year.

You do not have to own property to file as head of household. You will have a qualifying child. If you pay over half of the costs of maintaining your home (rent, utilities, maintenance and repairs, food eaten at home), then you can file as head of household.

You can't file as head of household this year because the baby isn't born yet. However, I believe that you will be able to next year. You do not need to own the house. But you've got a year to check it since it won't apply until the baby gets here.

Once your baby is born (that year) you can file for head of household. Doesn't matter if you rent or own.
