Well you will have the controls to engage the 4x4 or you can just look underneath the front of the jeep and see if it has a solid front axle. If you have a solid axle its 4x4 or if you have independant front suspension, seperate control arms its 4x2.

I have a 2006 GC 4x4 Ltd and it's very similar to the 2005. It should be all over the place ---you can tell by looking at the transmission shifter. Also should have a 4x4 decal on the rear. Also you can tell by the VIN nbr decoding: http://www.wkjeeps.com/wk_vin.htm
From what you are saying, I'd bet it is not a 4x4.

Well since the WK (Your Grand Cherokee designation is WK) would have in independent front suspension, it would have control arms anyways (Since this was mentioned by someone else above).
The easiest thing to look for would probably be to look under it and look for a front driveshaft. Also mentioned was just to look for the pumpkin, except it won't be centered in the front, will be more towards the driverside.
If it is 4WD you should be able to see a CV halfshaft, much like a front wheel drive car, going to wheels.

Pretty simple, look for the transfer case shift lever next to the gearshift, look on the outside of the vehicle on the back or sides toward the back it will say 4X4 if its 4WD.

Didn't you ask the person you bought it from if it was 2 or 4 wheel drive? That should have made a big difference in price!

why in the sam's heck didn't you just ask the guy that sold it to you? it should be in the owners manual/ contract. dang it must have been a heck of a deal to roll out of there without truly knowing what you are paying for.
