My pom is eight months old and started her first heat cycle. She used to love eating her food and finish her food very quickly (just in a few seconds), but now her food no longer interests her. she doesn't even touch her food unless i handfeed her, but she eats very slowly and doesn't seem to enjoy eating. Will she go back to normal after the heat cycle?

My dog is passing through her first heat too right now and she's eating quite normally. So a call to the vet sounds like the right thing to do.

Some dogs do. Just like humans, some dogs just don't feel well at that time. My youngest shepherd is like this. I can tell when she's within two weeks of her heat cycle because she barely eats and won't leave my side. When her heat cycle starts, she doesn't eat at all unless I tell her to and then only rabbit (I feed a raw diet). Normally I don't cater to her but I understand and she gets what she wants at this time. I just make her as comfy as possible, cuddle with her, keep her home, and don't enter her in any shows if it is scheduled within a couple weeks of her cycle. A warm towel on her tummy helps too. Just to be on the safe side, you should have a vet check her for pyometra which is a uterine infection. Since you don't know that this is just her normal routine for her heat cycle, you don't know that her behavior isn't due to illness like I do with my girl. If you're not going to show or breed, you may just want to spay your dog and never worry about this again.

Why Dogs Stop Eating

Hello,

My female dog is in her first heat cycle and also experienced a lack of appetite, which is unusual because she is usually such a voracious eater. In response, I did the following. I went to the grocery store and at the butcher counter, I requested just a single beef liver. They are not the most pleasant thing to handle, but to get my pup to eat, I would do anything! I took the liver home, fried it for 8 minutes with a few leftover veggies that were in the fridge (green beans, mostly) and chopped it into bite size pieces. I waited for it to cool and served it to her. She is eating well for the first time in a day and a half! I figured the liver might be appetizing to her, regardless of her appetite, and the veggies would help keep it more balanced.

Hope this helps.

It is very normal for the dog not to eat as much during this time.
I am going through the same thing right now, with both my male
and female maltese. They eat a little and sometimes skip meals
but they are drinking their water. I give them treats to during the
day so I know they are not starving or anything like that. This is
a very common question and it will only last a few more days.

On the one hand, their appetite does tend to go down some during heat, but usually not that much. On the other hand, some problems that can occur around heat cycles (such as pyometra and metritis) can cause fever and thus depress appetite significantly. If she seems otherwise happy and active, she's probably OK and will start eating more soon. If she seems lethargic or you notice other symptoms, have her checked.

when your pup is hungry it will eat, don;t create a food problem by hand feeding her, Their behavior during heat can be a real roller coaster ride of hormones , this breed has phantom pregnancies often, but normally dogs don't starve themselves, but she could be pineing for a male. Have her spayed as soon as possible and all that weird stuff will stop.

I would have her checked by the vet, to be on the safe side. They usually eat more than normal during a heat.
