The checkered floor in the both rooms may end up looking cheap if it is not decorated properly. Go with the stone look floor so that each room can be defined with it's own personality. Unless you have a 1950's theme threw your whole house use the stone look.Save the checked for bathroom, laundryroom, familyroom or other room not open to the kitchen and livingroom.

The stone floor sounds nicer especially if you're worried about showing dirt since the black and white checkered look is much harder to keep clean. Not to confuse you with a third choice, but you can always have a floating wood installed over an existing floor. Wooden floors are classic and rich, and you can add a rug to cozy it up.

Rip it all out! The whole thing is just WRONG!!! You need to start from scratch. Put in a cork floor, preferrably a pink cork floor. They are available in some of the finer hardware stores. Put hooks on the front and rear doors. These are to put the boots and shoes on, which your guests either take off, or . . .
There are now going to be large meat hooks hanging from your ceiling. They need not have bloody highlights, but that would help with the effect you are trying to create here. Put up a little sign, that says something to the effect of:
"Take your boots and shoes off, or you will be impaled on these meat hooks." That ought to solve your problem with people walking in with muddy boots and outdoor wear.
Now, NO CHECKERS and NO ROCK! stick with the cork and you will be happy. Take it from the

by stone, do you mean slate, that's what I have in my kitchen and it works great, dark enough to hide dirt and when water spills it soaks it up so no one slips,.If you are considering it for the living room I would do laminate wood floors, they are easy to install and maintain.
