I have been on the Birth Control pill for 3 years, and recently i found out that the pill can cause a vitamin b defficiency. I got a Super B-complex supplement and a multi vitamin, (which also contains some vitamin b). Should i cut out the b-complex and just stick with the multi vitamin- and just have one or the other? Are there any negative effects of too much vitamin b? Thanks.

Hi Bethieb. There is probably no harm in taking the extra B complex.

Please note: "vitamin b" is not one vitamin; it is many:

1) B1 - thiamin
2) B2 - riboflavin
3) B3 - niacin
4) B5 - panthothenic acid
5) B6 - pyridoxine
6) B12 - cobalamin
7) Folate
8) Biotin

Only B6 is thought to have any significant risk associated with very high doses taken long-term (300+ milligrams per day for years).

There is some discussion (it is very controversial, which means no one knows for sure) in the current medical literature about possible risks associated with long-term, high doses of Folate, but you would not likely be getting such doses with one B-complex capsule plus a multi.

So, feel comfortable taking both supplements. You are more likely to have good things happen than bad things from this regimen.

A good rule of thumb id to start slow with a good multivitamin with B-Complex and then advance to adding a secondary dose of B-Complex later if there is a need which only a talk with your Doctor can confirm, considering we don't know your age or medical history! BTW as stated earlier as a general rule your body flushes away excess vitamin B's but if you have a disorder that prevents this excess could accumulate, causing complications. Peace!

The multivitamin is fine. You will not have to worry about too much Vit B as any thing over what you need will flush out in your urine. The daily needs should be listed on the bottle. Don't take mega-doses and you'll be fine.
