Usually a community college is a two year degree program ending with either an Associate Degree in Science or Associate Degree of Arts. The price per credit hour is usually less, and the classes are typically smaller.

A university is usually a 4 year degree program, or more. The four year degree is a Bachelor's Degree. Although typically they also offer Master's programs, and a PhD level. The price per credit hour is usually more, the classes more crowded, but you usually have a wider selection of classes and degree programs than you do in a community college.

If the community college has an agreement with the local university, your credits will typically transfer. It's a cheaper way of getting your "basic" requirements towards a 4 year degree.

A university is a four-year accredited school that is able to give Master's degrees along with Bachelor degrees, and often can award Doctorates. The professors all have doctor's degrees. University teaching is all academic usually and the faculty is expected to write papers that are printed in academic journals or else books. You must meet several requirements to be asked to go to school there.

A community college is a two year school usually with academic pre-university classes, and also first steps in professional (nursing, police) and other types of learning (plumber, HVAC, etc.) Professors need only a Master's degree. Students can enter with a high school diploma or an entry test.

jr. college is cheaper than university, it also allows a student to try and try again if needed, it is not as strict with some of the acedemic policies, there may be Phd professors but mostly professors with master degrees. university is more expensive and bigger but professors are all Phd's and the level and expectations is greater. You get a large amount of info thrown at you in class and the resources at the library is usually excellent.

A community college is usually like a trade school. A two or four year college has a broader base of taught knowledge. I tried to simplify this answer.
