Perhaps if they understood it to begin with, they wouldnt be in the mess they are in today would they?
Unbelievers Ive noticed have an uncanny ability to be completely blind to many of the meanings of Scripture. All too often they try to take a very literal read of it and try to directly frame it into their 20th-21st century mindset and that simply doesnt work. When reading things like the Bible you have to be able to weigh certain verses with others, and always consider the context in which the author was speaking becuase that is crucial to good hermeneutics. Also the unbeliever lacks the Holy Spirits help in knowing truth so they are very much at a disadvantage.

According to the Bible, the term ex-Christian is an oxymoron. There are those who may have called themselves Christian, understood the tenets of Christianity, read the scriptures, participated in a fellowship of believers, and truly thought that they had "become Christian". But the scripture makes it clear that those who do not persevere to the end are not truly Christian.
Leaving the Christian faith is an indication that they did not truly accept the reality of God, His holiness, their need for forgiveness, and the redemption of Jesus Christ to the exclusion of temptations of the world. They may feel that they have become more enlightened, but they have revealed that they did not possess regeneration by the Holy Spirit and therefore they did not truly understand what it is to be Christian.

I believe that most atheists do understand Christianity, and the Bible. Many have chosen to go with science instead. (Though it is possible to believe both the church and science).
Some may not like corruption in the church--money for the building fund, money for this, that and the other thing. Whatever, we have free will, and freedom of religion, so people can believe whatever they choose to believe.
I believe that they should all get off of each other's backs--and mind their own businesses--it beats fighting!!

If an Atheist is an ex-Christian, then that person wasn't a Christian at all, nor did they understand the Bible or God.

Exactly---most Atheists I know were previously devout theists--they just tired of the contradictions & hypocrisy they encountered within religion---In fact most atheists know the contents of the Bible far better than Christians do--which is usually the reason they became atheists in the first place!!

I know what you're saying. I was a Catholic for 16 years and I am now an Atheist. I get tired of the Christians who tell me, "you have to read the Bible to understand", "you don't know until you try", "you have to have faith". I read the Bible, I tried, and I had faith. But I never really believed. Now I just have more ammo to throw at the Fundies to contradict what they try to tell me :)

Sorry but I am a Christian who use to be an Atheist. I use to think that Christians imagined everything and needed evidence, but who knew if that evidence that came from man is flawed. I think I will take faith over evidence.

Don't confuse Y!A "Christians" for Christians. With few exceptions, the Y!A crop is a bunch of loudmouths who simply desire to feel superior to other people and don't have a sincerely Christian impulse in their bodies.

You guys need to meet Jesus. My prayer is that He will reveal Himself to you. You've been through Churchiosity and the Lord needs to touch you. Knowing the Lord and attending church are two different things.

I think what brings former "christians" to atheism is misunderstanding Christianity. They refuse it. So they haven't fully lived it. So they haven't understood it like someone who is living it.
