I have never owned a Rottie, but have owned a total of nine Dobermans in the past 25+ years and I can tell you they are very protective over the territory and owner/family. They are very intelligent, protective with tremendous strength and stamina. On the other hand they are very devoted, loyal and affectionate to their family. The Dodies I currently have are at 70-75 lbs for the females and a male at 90lbs. I did have a male Dobie that passed away that weighed 110lbs. To give you an example on how much I trust my Dobermans to protect their home, I haven't locked my doors of my house day/night whether I am home or not for the past 13 years and no one has ever attempted to intrude. Of course my dogs have always been inside dogs. A Doberman is too intelligent and needs to be a close part of your family so never tie this breed up outside or make it an outside dog. It will ruin his pride/heart.and spirit. They are also very head strong so they need to know they are not the boss. Extreme measures are not necessary at training this breed. All it will take is lots of time, love and attention. A Doberman will most definitely devote is life to you if treated with respect.

We have had Dobermans and Rottweilers and have just adopted a pit bull. You are asking about dominance and that is the PERSONALITY of the individual animal. A pack has one ALPHA, either male or female, and many other secondary alphas, alpha wannabes, and just others. Any of our animals would have protected us. You must also keep in mind the age of any children in your home and be careful to get a dog capable of tolerating them. At night,I used to answer the door with my dog by my side. You should have seen the looks on the solicitors' face!

If you have never had a guard dog or a dog in the working class of canines, start by doing your research and educate yourself, there are alot of variables here, why not start with a hard wired alarm system first. Dogs are a 10 to 15 year commitment and become family members, you don't need a dominate dog you need one that is highly trained and intelligent, not just to look vicious or act mean to anyone that walks by, mean dominate dogs are a threat to their owners the public and to themselves, If you truly want a guard dog seek out a honest knowledgeable breeder, because of their popularity they are often over breed and have temperament issues, let the buyer beware

Rotties are more laid back and good family dog and built in family protector. Dobes are more dominate and therefore need a person that would be the alfa person and pack leader otherwise the Dobes will dominate over you and that will not be good. Dobes are also good protectors. Be careful with both. Rotties are up to 150# Dobes will be about 70# Research more. Both are from germany and were breed for guarding

Man, I would definately say a Doberman. I love Dobermans. All the rotty's I have worked with seem a little too nice compared to the Dobermans

id personally go with a boxer, and not a rott or a doberman.. dobermans like to have another doberman around, and not having one can cause them a lot of anxiety and other problems.. rottweilers are good at protection, but they can also be too good at it, if you smell me.. rottweilers are great dogs to have if you have a lot of experience with dogs
i think a male boxer is a great alternative.. theyre almost as large in stature as a rott and they have that aggressive look and feel to them.. but they are also more likely to simply scare someone with their bark and demeanor, not with an aggressive action.. and they are great family dogs
id at least consider it if i were you

Rottweiler is a better choice, don't go cheap...get a good breeder, check with the AKC, they can recommend a good breeder in your area, training is very important for control...watch the dog whisper, he's great! Love you poochy...most important...good luck!!!

Well, it depends on how you raise them but if I were you, I'd go for the Rottweiler! Good companions and good for protection!

my friend has a rottwieler and it is super protective of anyone it doesnt know, and it has a very good memory, it remmeber me after the first tiem i saw it, but still gave me a few protection sniffs. i beleive his dog is about 2.5-3 maybe even 3.5 feet from head to toe. and about 90 pounds, very rough estimate. they are very vicous 'looking' and aggressive. i would say rottwieler for the win.

It all depends on how you train them man. Any dog can be super mean or super nice. But I would go with a Rotty.
