Our son used to love TV (Thomas and Friends, Dora, Caillou, etc.). One day he decided that he didn't want to watch anymore TV. He kind of freaks out when the TV gets turned on, so we have had no TV in our house for the past 3 weeks. We are proud of him and are enjoying life with no television. We are just trying to figure out where this is coming from. Any ideas?

Have you tried asking him what the problem is? Young children can be very sensitive to other people's opinions- all it might have taken was someone's comment that he watches too much TV. (No kidding, I've heard of kids who will stop eating entirely when someone makes a comment about them eating too much.) If that isn't the problem, perhaps he has really just chosen to be more active. Encourage it, and be willing to go no TV with him- it will open up all sorts of opportunities for family time- read together, play games, whatever. If you must, set your VCR to record your must-watches and watch them after he's in bed.

I would wait it out, see if its a passing phase. Your son my have seen something upsetting on TV. Or the TV could just be over stimulating for him. He may have just desided its not fun. A 3yr old mind is a wonder to us all. Or it could be a hearing issue. Might try talking to him and see if he wants to watch the TV with no sound? See if you cant eliminate possable things that could be the issue. A few people have mentioned the possibility of Autism and though that is a minor possablity. As a mom of a 5yr old who was diagnosed with asperger's(a form of high functions Autism). i would think there would be more signs of sensory issues if that was the case. If this doesn't pass in another week or so i would take him to your family Dr. and see what they think, cant hurt to ask them about your sons sudden change towards the TV. Good luck and I hope things work out for you and your family.

Try talking with your son; see if he saw something that scared him, as another poster has suggested. If that's the case, offer to sit with him while he watches a little bit of tv (five minutes or so), and see if that reassures him. If you suspect there may be a deeper reason, see your pediatrician asap, in case there's something that needs attention.

Enjoy life with no tv. We've lived in a rural area with no reception for 20 years now, and enjoy watching what we want, when we want it. We really don't miss broadcast television at all.

Wow...interesting. Perhaps he saw something that frightened him? My brother is a big fan of shows like those too (he's 4) and we've never had that issue. If I had to guess, he saw something he either didn't understand or watched something which scared him. Perhaps one of those shows had a Halloween episode, or one about scary dreams, and it scared him a bit. I know Caillou and the like are pretty tame shows, but you never know with kids. Try asking him about it. In the mean time, sit down and spend some time together reading and drawing! :)

Not sure! Maybe he got a shock from the tv one day and is afraid on it now. Just keep it on in the back ground and play with him in the room to get use to it,just incase it's a fear now.But yes! Enjoy that he don't want to watch it! My TV is on Cartoons all day long weather there watching or not,if I turn it,they flip on me!

Who really cares ................................ just enjoy the quiet and peacefulness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TV's are NOT a requirement - people would be so much better off without one.
Years ago, I was without one for 6 months and loved every minute of it.
My son only allows his girls to watch TV one hour a day and they are straight A students. They read a lot, play games and spend a lot of 'family time' together.

Autism or another disorder may be the source. It could be that he is very sensitive to stimuli, such as the flashing light, constantly changing scenes, or the high pitch noise that electronics emit. Or a simple reason could be that he is just bored for the time being with it, and is searching for other things to entertain him.

Certainly is a good thing, whatever the cause is!

he probably saw something that freaked him out and decided not to watch TV anymore or he is just smart enough to know TV isn't healthy at his age.
