No, actually it's the smaller dogs that mature faster than the bigger ones (about 6 months for breeds like chihuhuas, poms, maltese, yorkies etc...). Usually around six months is normal, but some wait untill 8 months to a year, esp. for larger breeds (some larger breeds are not fully grown untill about 2 years, like Mastiff, Great Dane, Great Pyr, Bullmastiff etc...). But each dog is different, these are just averages.

The reproductive cycle for the female dog begins at around 5-8 months with hormonal changes. The first outward sign,the "heat"usually becomes apparent around 8-12 months altho as with all females (lol) there will be various changes as thay mature before the "heat".It is best to have her spayed before the first heat ;this can safely be done on most breeds by 4-5 months,sometimes due to circumstances this is done earlier.It is a bit more risky to do a spay during heat(because of the swelling of internal organs at this time and excessive bleeding) so by all means plan ahead and have your little girl all "fixed" up early!Good luck and many happy years together!

In my experience, and I've had a lot of dogs, they usually go into heat around the time they turn 1 year old. all dogs are different but in my experience that's when they usually go into heat.
