It is the dentist that recommends it to the parents due to your dental problems that need to be corrected before you are finished growing, movement is more difficult to accomplish when you are older. Also these dental problems that you have now may lead to larger problems later such as TMJ, migraine headaches, grinding or clenching or excessive wear of the teeth. There are plenty more reasons why you should get them, when there is a problem. They never say you need them if you don't, and won't place someone in orthodontics that are unnecessary either. Hope I've answered your question. So you can quit blaming your parents (be glad they will pay for them!) they aren't "making you get them" as punishment, only because they want you to have the best teeth possible. You'll be glad you did when you're older. Good luck with the ortho!

I'm a dentist.
Any sort of health care consists of two parties: the doctor and the patient. The patient presents with a chief complaint, or simply presents for a routine examination. The doctor makes the diagnosis.
If the doctor diagnosis a poor bite or crooked teeth that can be corrected by orthodontic therapy (i.e. braces), then he/she will recommend the treatment to the parents.
I can't tell you how many times parents have come to me saying "my daughter needs braces, her teeth are crooked" when the problem is skeletal in nature and requires not only braces, but corrective jaw surgery to address.
That's the problem with patients nowadays--especially when it comes to dental care: they think they know what they're talking about, when in reality, they're partially or completely wrong 99% of the time.
Like would be so much easier for us doctors if patients just told us their complaint and let us do the diagnosing and treatment planning. Instead, we encounter patients who make their own diagnosing and their own treatment plans, and become agitated when we tell them something different than what they expected.

The dentist. A lot of dental plans cover braces now, but they certainly aren't going to cover something just because your parents want it done.

How do I miss Elaine
I've never seen so many demands
Neither someone doing all that you do
You don't know what's conscience
You don't see I'm a poor lad
All you can think is luxury and riches
All that you see you want to buy
Alas, my God, how do I miss Elaine
That really was a woman
Sometimes she would starve by my side
And thought that having nothing
to eat was pretty
But when she saw me upset
She would say: "My son, what
can we do!"
Elaine wasn't vain in the slightest
Elaine surely was a true woman

The dentist is the specialist in this area. If he thinks it may affect your bite, then get it done. If you just have minor imperfections, no conscientious dentist would recommend the cost, as in $$$!
