He taught you to play HIS game, chase me. Now you have to retrain him to play your game, CATCH YOU.

Start on leash and let him get to the end of a six foot leash. Call him and start moving away from him. When he chases you and "catches" you, give him a really yummy treat. Repeat this a lot until your dog comes right to you.

Get a longer leash (something like 50 feet of nylon rope) tie a hook in one end and attach to him. tie knots in it every 6 feet and a loop in the end. Hold on to the loop and do the same thing you did with the leash. If he loses interest part way to you, step on the long rope (the knots are so it doesn't slip under your feet)

Teach your dog coming to you is the best thing in the whole world. the funnest, happiest, most exciting thing to do.

This will take a while.

FOR SAFETY, if you don't have a fenced yard, never let him out without a leash.

For training, don't let him out without a leash, even in the fenced yard.

Begin with a short leash and a pocket full of cut up hot-dogs (about cubic 1/2 centimeter each).

Let him go to the end of the leash, and call his name. If he turns to you, quickly say, "YES!" and offer him a hot dog bit.

Then begin to say "SPOT, COME!" and give him the hotdog bit only when he comes to you and SITS (and you grab his collar). (If he doesn't sit, he's liable to run off). You give it to him ONLY after you have his collar.

He will probably be very interested in you as long as you have the hotdogs, but say "YES!" once he does the correct behavior. He will come to associate the word YES with the good feelings of having a treat.

Do this for no more than 5 minutes three times daily. Let the leash get longer, then let him start dragging it. Within a week you should have him trained to come to you.

Great suggestions from renodogmom. I'll reiterate that you should make it a new game to have him come to YOU. To play that game, do not chase him any more under any circumstances (presuming that you only have him loose in safe circumstances). It can be amazingly easy to get dogs to come to you if you run away from them, possibly even throwing in some bowing motions to simulate a dog's play bow. Make noises that are short and high pitched like "pup-pup-pup-pup-pup!!" and avoid any tones of voice that sound like a drill sergeant.

To put a little more effort into a turn-around, start by playing "the name game" with your dog ON LEASH. Call his name, and say "Yes!" the SECOND he turns his head to look at you, and follow up with a treat or a few seconds of playing with a toy. Do this a bunch of times a day. Get your dog excited to give you his attention and come to you when he's on leash, and you can work up gradually to getting him to do the same when he's running around the yard like a crackerdog.

Watch the Dog Whisperer on National Geographic Channel. Then, buy his training DVD. He is amazing and though you will see that he works with the dogs, you'll also see it is the dog owners who need the lessons. Good luck and enjoy the educational stuff that will help your dog be the best there is..Berry

that was never a game like tag
he is dominant over you, he is basically going to do what he wants until he decides you can get him.

what you need to do it stop chasing him and teach him to come on command, i suggest finding a training class because this is a big problem. traffic, other dogs and even mean neighbors could be a real threat to your dog if you dont teach the "come" command

you can teach it, and if he dont learn, go get some dog tips for a trainer, or you can research it online
