As a twin myself, I think that twins should NOT be dressed alike. We were never dressed alike. When we were old enough to choose our own clothes, we often chose the same thing in different colors, but we almost never wore them on the same day.
I asked my mother once why she did not dress us alike --she said that she was advised that dressing us alike would send a signal that we were only half of a pair and not individuals.
We were also in different classes all thru school. In fact, in the early grades, many of our classmates did not know the other twin.
My sister and I were close when we were younger, but we never felt like we needed the other twin around constantly.
I believe that twins should be treated as siblings --not "twins"

I think it's ok when they are really little, but as they get older, I think they should be able to dress as their personality shows. If I had twins I think the cut off age would be 3-4 y/o, then I would let them start picking out what they wanted to wear. They have their own personalities even though they may look alike. I went all through school with a set of twin girls, the only way I could tell them apart (besides how they were dressed) was when I talked to one of them. Their personalities were very different from each other.

I received my B.A. in Child Development and during my course work the studies showed that it was better not to dress your twins alike. If you dress them alike they won't develop their own sense of identity was the theory.
My friend did a compromise and would have one twin wear the same dress but in different colors. That way she still had them dressed similarly but they were in different colors.
You can research the issue and decide on your own. I know it can be fun to dress them the same. My two girls are 1 1/2 and 3 1/2 and have a few outfits that are the same. Oddly enough my odlest likes it when she and her sister dress the same. It really only happens aobut once or twice a month but she does like it.
You could do a smiliar compromise and have a few twin outfits and dress them the same on occasion. I like to dress my girls the same when we go to shopping malls, zoos, etc so that if one gets lost I can show them what the other is wearing.
If you are worried about it let them dress differently at home and the same on public outings or just buy them outfits that are smiliar.

I have identical twin boys. When they were very young we'd dress them alike. Now, they wear whatever they like. Some days they'd dress alike, most they wear different clothes. There is a big festival in Twinsburg OH. every year. At the festival everyone dresses alike. It's all comes down to personal preference. When they are old enough to decide - let them.

I have twin girls - when they were little they wore the same outfit but in different colors... on occasion. I still buy 2 of everything (usually different colors), this way they both feel like they are being treated equally and one didn't get anything "better" than the other one. To this day they dress differently to express themselves (they are almost 9) but on occasion they still love to dress alike - I leave it up to them to choose. Its really cute when they both have their jeans on and wear a pink shirt that says "Blame My Sister..." LOL... Oh by the way... they are fraternal twins!

I think that it's cute when twins are dressed alike and I don't see any problem with doing it until they are old enough to decide for themselves if they still want to or not.

No! Absolutely not! I don't know who came up with that silly and damaging practice but twins are not clones- they are two separate and distinct individuals. All a parent is doing by dressing their twins the same is ruining any chance of the children to have any sense of uniqueness. Sure, it might look cute to the parents and some deranged relatives but believe me, it is so wrong. I should know I'm a twin.
Besides, if you buy them different clothes they can wear each others and have twice as much!

When the children are young, it's easier to dress them alike to keep track of them (If they are the same sex). It's cute when you take pictures too. However when they are old enough to want to wear a different outfit because of the color, I wouldn't dissuade them. Let them choose and they will let you know when they don't mind wearing the same outfit. This way you know when they need to have their own identity. Yes, I dressed our twins in the same outfit with different colors when young and then let them choose as they got older.

I am a twin. My mother dressed us in similar clothes but different colors until we were ten. For our 10th birthday, we got the gift of being able to wear different clothes.
I didn't mind it. It was kinda neat dressing alike. And as a mom now, I can see how much easier it was to have us in the same clothes. A lot less to worry about.

No I don't think so. I mean, children are themselves, they have their own personality, and if I was a twin, I would want to be myself and not the other person or vice versa. Maybe when they are babies it's cute, but when they hit 3 or 4, they should start to choose. And if they WANT to dress alike, then that's fine. But even though they look alike, they are two separate people. :]
