Get him/you a nice little tin, like a cookie tin, and get some molding cement. Put the cement in the tin and have him place his hands in it.

Since he really won't remember much about his first birthday, he will always have that as a memory.

I have a little poem to share with you too. I found my handprints from when I was two (I'm 29) in a box when I was 13 with a little note inside.

These are my hands
My hands will do
A thousand loving things for you
And you'll remember when I am tall
That once my hands were just this small.

Good luck!

At that age, he will have more fun with a couple of large cardboard boxes than he will with any expensive toy!

When my daughter was that age, she got a toy at Christmas that came in a box with a clear plastic window in it --she put the box on her head and walked around the house for half an hour!!! ( And the toy? She played with it a few times and then ignored it!)

Seriously, a toy that lets him use his imagination will last a lot longer than any other. Try getting him several different hats ( fireman, policeman, army, etc)so that he can pretend. And then play WITH him.

I honestly think that the best toys out there on the market are the Leap Frog series. They offer toys from 0-14years. My son is about 2 1/2 months and he loves his talking Tad. It sings depending on if it is Nap time or Play time and shapes and colors and lights up. It could keep his attention forever.

My son got a play kitchen with all the pretend food and cookware. He loved putting stuff in the oven, taking food out of the fridge, washing the dishes, going to the market, etc. He is now almost 4 and the food is still his favorite toy. He will carry it around in his wagon and pretend to go on a picnic. He could identify tons of food just by all the time he spent playing with those things. Doesn't hurt to have him interested in learning to cook, either!

Good luck finding something but whatever you buy I'm sure that he is going to like it

a walk and ride toy is a great idea. You can convert it from a push toy to help him start walking and then you make it a ride on toy.

I'm getting for my daughter who turns one in April and that's what I did for my oldest daughter. Its a great toy and serves a very practical purpose. Playskool has a great one. I'm adding the webpage for it from toys r us.

My son was wild about the Step 2 Up and Down Rollercoaster and his Jump-O-Leen (a mini moon bouce) at that age. Hope that helps!

We bought my daughter a swing set. She loved the baby swing. We've added on over the years. She is now 9 and still swings. My little boy, 7, plays on it all the time.

Good investment.

In all honesty, the first birthday is more for the parents than for the child. He won't remember it. There's not enough information in his accumulated experience to know why it's important. Get him whatever you want to get him; you're getting it more for you than for him anyway.

if you don't have one already, a ride on car is great! We got one for our daughter on her 1st birthday and she loves it. There are so many buttons, and she still loves to ride that thing around.
