We used the following sentence to test the Army teletypes in correct function: "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog's back 1234567890 times."

All the letters and numerals were exercised. Then we used a long series of Rs and Ys because that allowed the mechanics to hone in on the teletype's range.

Sentences with all the alphabet's letters are called pangrams.

Here's a few:

The five boxing wizards jump quickly.
All questions asked by five watch experts amazed the judge.
Woven silk pyjamas exchanged for blue quartz.
Six big devils from Japan quickly forgot how to waltz.
Jackdaws love my big sphinx of quartz.
Pack my box with five dozen liquor jugs.

As well as speeding up typing, they get used to illustrate font samples.
