i recently purchased a used 02 VW jetta GLS (w/alloy rims) with a pre-certified warranty from volkswagen. the car has 32,000 miles and i had the car examined extensively for problems (i.e. odometer rollback and mechanical problems) which i didnt find. have i gotten a good deal on this jetta ($12,495)? If so, what do you guys recomend for the upkeep with this car? What are the common problems associated with this vehicle, as opinions vary. I drive 60 miles a day.

Consult the owners manual if you have one, Keep up on oil changes, Tire care is a big deal also, since you drive so many miles a day just keep up on oil changes and you should be smooth sailing for a while. I think you got a really good deal and the fact that they didn't find any problems with the car you should be ok. Hope that helps..... Drive safe.

With the reliability of vws, no, you did not get a good deal. These are the most expensive cars to maintain, and they are very poorly engineered. jd power has rated vw jetts at #26 out of 27 cars (#27 was the vw beetle, #25 was the vw golf) researched for reliability... for the last 7 years in a row.
common problems-
The amazing 'coolant migration' somehow, the coolant manages to disappear from the cooling system, and end up in the tail lights. (when i first heard this, i didnt believe it, i then saw for myself that it really does happen)
and also the faulty water pump goes right along with the coolant migration.
faulty radios
short battery life
worst customer service on the planet
faulty ignition coils
windows falling off frames
automatic transmissions are junk (youll be replacing this near 75,000 miles)
sludgging oil (which is a ridiculous problem, because vw has a specialized oil for it)
burning oil caused by the incompatibility of vw oil and the original headgasket.
belt breakage
honestly, if i were you, i would seriously consider selling it and buying something else... i mean if you have the money to maintain it, and dont mind all the problems with it, keep it.

Regular oil filter changes and oil changes also keep the cooling liquid always topped up use the proper cooling liquid as the motor is of Alloy construction and electrolysis can set in.

Oil change every 12,000 miles and maintain close to the rated tire pressure. One of the most common mechanical problems is one of the belts breaking, and the turbos (if you've got it) tend to poop out frequently at that age too.
