Sometimes when I right about to fall asleep, I feel this sucking/pulling feeling (mainly in my head) and it is so overwhelming and scary that I fight against it to wake up. I was thinking that it was just the naturally feeling of just falling asleep, but I figure it should just happen without me even knowing, especially the exact moment I'm falling asleep. Kinda weird. I also see bright light patterns during this time to. I heard a Third-eye Blind song describing the feeling a while ago, I think the song was called "narcolepsy." So that made me think that it might be normal or at least some others might experience it. Anybody?

Not suggesting I have narcolepsy. Just heard the feeling I get sometimes described in a song called "narcolepsy." The guy was just talking about sleep in general actually.

Yeah, my body has a wierdism about like that only when I wake back up it's with a big jerk. I'm older, and have had this since I was about 16. What seems to aggravate it (or maybe even cause it) is either my head is positioned on the pillow where it can move when I fall asleep (an inch or two will do) and if some part of my body is making a noise, like a popping jaw. A sudden noise (phone?) just as I'm falling asleep will do it too. I see round bright blue rings and my forehead skin tenses up when it happens. Must not be fatal, I'm almost 51.

Well, I can't answer your question, but I'm really glad to hear that I'm not the only one with the "sucking" feeling sometimes when going to bed. I haven't always had this problem. It started about a year ago and I'm 22 now. I thought it was the beginning of an anxiety attack b/c for me it feels very similar. I also get a little bit of vertigo when this happens. I had a MRI of the brain because of vertigo during migraines about 2 months ago and nothing was wrong in my brain, so I'm guessing this sucking/vertigo feeling has to be just something that happens. Maybe theres a low level of something in the blood. I really have no idea, but I have a doc appointment Monday, so I think I'll ask! I'll keep you posted if I find anything out!

I suggest going to a sleep disorders specialist. I am not a doctor by any means, but I always thought narcolepsy was when you fall alseep INVOLUNTARALY, and you are saying you're trying to fall asleep. Maybe you have a sleep disorder such as sleep apnea...

That's normal. You are just noticing as you drift off into sleep. Happens all the time. Obviously, reacting to it in a stressful way wakes you up.

You could be having what is called hypnogogic hallucinations which are sometimes related to narcolepsy.Or you could be "prepping" yourself for astral travel but are afraid to leave your body.Look these 2 conditions up and see if either fits.
