Plain basic frosting...a little runny...powdered sugar and water about 2 cups p.sugar and add a tsp of water at a time until the right consistancy...
Buttercream rich fluffly best for cakes and decoractions
this will make everyone think that you had an expensive bakery.
1/2c. crisco
1lb confectioners sugar/ powdered sugar same thing..1lb=2C.
5Table spoons water or milk*
1 tsp. Real Vanilla (more expensive but worth it) if you want it really silver white then use clear vanilla extract
and Several drops of butter flavor a little goes a long way
and just a tiny pinch of salt
Beat salt and crisco and P. Sugar. Then add other ingredients.
If using water it will last 2 weeks in a covered container unrefrigerated. But it is a little grainier...
I like using milk best it gives it a fluffy creamy texture.
This recipe can be doubled or more.
oh and add any food coloring you like.
Enjoy!

For a basic buttercream icing, you'll need a fat like butter or shortening, to which you add confectioners sugar. If you want it thin enough to spread, add milk slowly until you have the consistency you need. Add more sugar if you want it stiff for decorating with shells, leaves, flowers, etc. If you just use confectioners sugar and water, you'll get the kind of icing that's used on cookies.
If you want to expand from that, check Joy of Cooking. They have some great simple recipes like mocha frosting and European bittersweet chocolate frosting (my personal favorite!).
Have fun!!

Mix powdered sugar with water or lemon juice - use very little of the fluid, just enough to turn the sugar into a stir-able mass. If you use water, it'll just taste sweet, if you use lemon juice, it'll be lemony (duh). Both are delicious.
