You should use Solder pot, or Eutectic (these are different manufcturers' descriptions of the same type of overload relay). These relays use thermal elements to melt solder which holds a spring-loaded trip switch. The thermal elements (heaters) come in many sizes so that widely differing motor currents can be accommodated with ease. The heaters are rated for the amount of current they will allow before melting the solder, with a "smaller" heater melting the solder at a lower current, and a "larger" heater melting the solder at a higher current. For a starter in a cooler area than the motor, you use the next "smaller" heater to simulate the warmer motor, and for a starter in a warmer area than the motor, you use the next "larger" heater to simulate the cooler motor.

I would say that in 98% of the cases that the motors and the contactors are at different temperatures. Why, because the motors are out side, in the plant, remote from the starter.

I dont think it matters which one you use, since most of the time, the motor is at a different temperature than the starter
