How do get rid of icons in MS Window 'Add or Remove Programs' after the programs have been removed?

I have already removed the programs but their icons remain in Add/Remove. When I try to delete the icon again, it says cannot locate file, but it is still showing that they are taking up memory. One offending icon is AOL. Seems like it is permantly imbedded there.
