I'm not a very good painter and I haven't done it much either. What advice can you give me?

Painters tape. tape around all the wood work, tape around the ceiling and floors, if there is no woodwork, try to get the straitest line you can with the tape. You will need a large paint brush and a small, tiny one for tight spaces. And a paint roller. Make sure you have time to finish the room before you start. Do one coat first, wait until it is dry and do another if need be. Oh and always have a wet rag ready to whipe off paint from the wood or wall if you get paint someplace it should not be. Get that washed of right away before it drys. I also am self taught,I bought a house that every room was painted in flat paint. DO NOY BUY FLAT PAINT! You can't wash your walls or the paint comes off! When you buy paint they will ask you what type of finish you want, flat, satian,of semi gloss, get semi gloss!Your walls should be washed at least once a year. You don't want the paint coming off as your washing them. Good Luck!

use a paint shield when cutting in, start in the middle of the wall when rolling then move up and down w/ light pressure (this keeps you from having any excess paint near the ceiling or baseboards) , always backroll (go over what you just rolled to smooth it out) . reload the roller about every two rows or when the roller sounds like velcro being ripped apart... and have fun!

Go to a workshop as offered at your local Home Depot.
They do classes and you can learn how to paint like a pro for free.
