Hi,

Tomorrow I'm getting a new pup (Lab/Mix) about some months old I think. It's a gift from a teacher at my school. Um, in any case, is it still possible to house train it? My old dog was kinda of ignorant and failure in my part led it to not being housebroken. With this new pup, I want it to stay inside. Any starting tips on what I should do?
Thanks!

There's a lot to learn! Buy books, go to the library and check out books, get on the Internet, or talk to your vet.
And please!! Take care of your new pooch!! He relys on you!

If you dont know how to properly train an innocent dog, then you shouldnt get one. You said yourself you didnt manage it last time, and its not becasue the dog is ignorant. Its you.

Any dog can be trained but it takes patience and time and dedication and repitition. If you arent prepared to gently teach this dog what it needs to know to get along as a house dog, then dont get it until you educate yourself. Read Cesar Milans book on relating to dogs, and look at his website. Get involved with a training group in the area where you live where the dog can become used to other dogs. Thats important.

More than anything else, remember that a dog relies on you for everything. Their food, water, exercise, medical care and love. Make sure that you can step up and do all those things. If you cant, then dont take the dog. The fact that you dont even know how old it is, and you dont know that it can be trained at any age makes me wonder if you are responsible enough to take on such a big responsibility.

Think about it. Its a lifetime commitment.

Your getting a very good and smart breed dog,you have to let you pup know who is boss from the begining, dont be mean to it it takes time, they have puppy pads at Walmart {cheap} when your puppy has to go it will normally start sniffing the ground, put it on the pad or if you dont want to go the pad way put it outside when it sniffs around,or try every 35 minutes putting it outside to potty,it will catch on,no dog is to old to learn, some are just hard headed.Remember every time it goes with out slipping up love on it and it will love you back.GOOD LUCK!

I must tell u that lab dogs are really naughty as pups...i wud kno coz i have one. They luv to chew on any and everything in sight. At first its a cute habit but afterward it gets outta hand.

I kept my lab indoors a s a pup as well...but the key is to get him a toy to keep him busy... they tend to get bored easily, plus it keeps them outta trouble.

A daily walk wid ur pet also shows him that ur the boss of the pack and it trains him to be obedient. Give him lots of water coz no matter what they always seem thirsty. And choose a good pup chow.

try pad training. You can buy dog pads at any pet store. find a place in the house that is a spot he can go to by his self. Take him to the pad every hour and stay there until he goes when he does give him a treat eventually he will go on his own and when he does see if he went and tell him how god he is and give him a treat after a wile stop the treats.

i trained my dog to sit, shake hands and go to the potty by myself.

it all amounts upto rewards when they do something right.

if you are going to keep him inside you have to give ihim a potty spot (in the corner of each room with a newspaper lining) reward him every time he uses the potty spot. or you could designate an area in the yard for him to do his business and take him there every few hours and reward him when he uses it.

there are also a bunch of books and websites about self training your dog.

well first lets start with potty training you dont want a dog to go in the house so i suggest that wherever you want your dog to you know "go" you carry or take him to the place eventually he will learn that that it is own little toilet.

Go to Petsmart to get it trained...unless if you want to get yellow carpet, so the doggie stains won't be so obvious...
