I am a single mom and a college student and I really need money to help pay for my tuition next semester. I know that I can write a grant proposal to get money, but I don't know how.

Do some internet searches. Do searches under your gender, your major, your ethnic heritage, see if your employer offers tuition reimbursement benefits, etc. etc. etc. You have to do the research. There are tons of scholarships out there--don't just apply for big ones, the little ones for $400 and $500 sometimes never get awarded because no one applied for them! You have to apply, apply for anything and everything you think you have a shot at. I am sure there are some grants aimed at single parents. Start researching and formulating the letters to ask the scholarship committees for funding. consider it a second job! Good luck!

The best place to start is research about the organization where you are applying for a college scholarship before completing the essay portion of the application. However, make sure to personalize it to the topic of the essay question. Have someone proofread for spelling, grammar, and getting the point across. Apply for scholarships that you qualify for no matter what because several small scholarship awards can add up. I will include several free sources to locate money to attend college next semester.

First, the college's financial aid office and website has a list of private scholarships offered from outside organizations and companies. Sometimes a college major's website will list scholarships, too.

Second, the public library has a book listing scholarships with some not even listed on the web.

Third, fill out the FAFSA form if you have not already. It will provide access to need based financial aid from the state and federal governments along with the college itself.

Finally, I recommend joining several free membership scholarship search websites. There are scholarships for a variety of things including ethnicity, clubs, hobbies, and even wearing duct tape to the high school prom. Most are updated on a regular basis. Most offer a customized search based on information entered onto a form on the website.

Good luck!

Your best bet would be to contact the Financial Aid offices at the schools you plan to attend. They will tell you what financial aid is available and how to apply for it.
