It's only a matter of how much you are willing to spend!

A lot of guys will swap in a 2 liter 914 Porshe engine/transaxle (you can't use you old transaxle). This is a relatively easy way to get 90 hp that's reliable and gets good mileage, and only costs about 3k to do

Some other folks have swapped in the 1.3 liter rotary (Wankel) from an RX-7 and gotten 180+ hp of water cooled power that way. This is an expensive way to go though (easily 5+k).

My advice, is to just upgrade to a 1600 dual port motor and just install some minor mods to that engine (pertronix hall effect points, Weber progressive carb, headers) - you'll get 60 hp stock, and say 75 mildly modified. A decent dual port with some minor head work, balanced and blueprinted, and with a Weber or Dellorto carb will cost about 2k. You currently have either a 1200 or 1300 motor, which puts your horsepower in the 35-45 hp range.

See my link for a decent engine supplier. A good VW mod shop that I can personally vouch for in Denver, CO is Painters Grinding.

BTW, all of the costs estimates I've given are for the engine or engine/transaxle...I've assumed you are supplying the needed labor :) If not, double the estimates I've given you.

FYI Porshe 911 engines do NOT "swap right in". All 911's are boxer 6's, there is not enough room for them.

As a self-taught drummer myself, i can tell you that there really is no 'fast" way to learn an instrument. It takes a lot of patience, practice, discipline, and hard work. Now that being said, some people do learn quicker than others so it all depends on the person. I have two cousins that both play guitar and both are self-taught. My one cousin Terry practiced just about every day and picked it up quicker than my cousin Dave, who didn't practice nearly as much. Terry became pretty darn good in about 8 months. It all boils down to how determined you are, how much you practice, and how quickly you pick things up. My advice would be to get an instructional book or DVD and learn a few chords. If you do it on your own you will save a lot of money and you can go at your own pace. Guitar lessons are not cheap these days, unless you know someone. Just give it a shot on your own for a month or 2 and see how you progress. Then if you feel you need lessons to get better, then find a good teacher that won't be too expensive. But the key is to practice....practice.....practice! Good Luck!

Dune Buggies & Hot VW's magazine did an article 2-3 months ago, and set up a set of rules that about 12 different engine builders competed in to see who would create the highest H.P.

Some of the rules were:
have a muffler
only carbs, no turbo or N.O.S. no fuel injection
stock size valve covers (so no high lift rocker arms)
limit size in bore and stroke
stock cooling tin
there were other rules but I dont remember them

the winner put out 224 hp on pump gas

get a hot vw's magazine to find ads for parts/whole engines

i have seen 1914cc turn key engines for less than $2500

Vw Beetle Motor

All good/funny answers. I don't know what you're wanting to do with this car, but my assumption is make it go fast from the stoplights and impress the girls. In that case, you could put an 1835cc motor in it and dump the clutch it would impress enough. But, if you want to line up against a camaro or mustang you're gonna want to go with the bolt-in porsche engine. I don't know for a fact that this would work without any modifications, but I can see where it might since Porsche is made by Volkswagon and are both rear engine cars. Or you can go the route of a large American V-8. I have seen beetles with 454 chevy big blocks in the front. Lots of mods and hardly worth it in my opinion.

As always when doing these kinds of modifications.......KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid, lol

Almost forgot. I used to just feed the squirrels in my '73 Super Beetle crack cocaine. Man it'd scream then.

Simplest answer would be to modify the engine from the Type 3 Varient with the dual carburetters or fit a 1600 engine with dualWeber Kadrons. With the Type 3 carbs you will need high clearance brackets to mount throttle shaft over the generator. Could also modify inlet/ exhaust manifolds to allow better engine breathing. The original manifolds were somewhat restricted.

Anything that will go in a Porsche 911 will go in a Beetle. Use the entire transaxle for strength.

911 engines can swap right in, i dont think the 911 was turbo back then but i know it can be easily modified from a later model.

ive seen a jet engine on a bug once, i think hes got a car domain site for it.

you can mount a ford 460 c6 and 9 inch in anything, including steel bathtubs, all it takes is a little know how, and a little more determination

well first off you dont assess motors by speed, you measure motors by size and/or horse power
that being said i have heard of a chevy 350 in a bug (mounted in the front)
if you want i can email a pretty cool vid of a bug doing a 1/4 mile run
