Seriously. I know I'm American but it's not like I stand out in any weird way. They stare so much and even if I look them straight in the eye the will keep staring. It's so rude and it makes me not like Italians which sucks.

I lived there for 2 years and couldn't stand how they would stare. Unlike in America they simply don't consider that to be rude. Also men like to stare at women and check them out. I was told by Italians that if the women don't get looked up and down by the men they think something is wrong with them. It's just a different culture over there.

I think that people who stare in general just like to watch people as their imaginations go to work considering the person that they are staring at. They are simply interested in others and are curious. In the states we are taught that it is rude to stare, but then we are also taught to mind our own business. Maybe the two go hand in hand.

It is not rude there. It is not rude to "cruise" in Asia by smiling at someone, either, but it is sometimes rude to just give the American "come hither look". You can ignore a look, or return it. It is your choice. You will not, however, change the culture.

They are curious. I have went there and asked a few people why they stare...and to them we do stand out in a wierd way...we dress different, walk different and such. Try going to japan...they LOVE americans. They wont stare but instead ask for you to take a picture with them...oh and they throw up the peace sign like there is no tomarrow. :]

It is rude, and they actually know it is, because if you ask Italian women they'll agreee with you.

They see you as a foreigner as "easy prey", I'm afraid.

It's an element of their macho society which they should change.

They don't go by stupid American standards. No being PC. Isn't that great? ;-)
No false modesty or American puritanism.
If you are in public and you don't like people to look at you, wear a burka. ;-)
