This is complicated -
I would be inclined to say that many people are told what they are supposed to believe, how they are supposed to behave, how to worship, how to pray, etc. But these things are better discovered on your own. Your personal relationship with God is a private and beautiful thing. It is not meant to be used for show. I believe a lot of "Religious" people are what I call "Stage Christians"
They go to church, quote scriptures, and lecture people but do not live by the rules. Some people just never get the chance to develop that relationship on their own because they are forced into a doctrine or lifestyle by their parents.
I am not saying this about Christians in general, but I have known people who call themselves religious but are the most hate-filled and judgemental people I have ever met. I think that the western culture is completely saturated with vanity and pride, and when you mix those things with religion you will get a lot of "Holier-than-thou" people, because appearing to be pure and spiritual feeds their own vanity and pride.

A true Christian would not exibit hate toward fellow men. I don't know how they exist, except to be hypocritical. Some churches, especially free will babtist or the like, are a cult. If you don't believe what they do, "YOUR GOING TO HELL!" They use pulpit scare tactics to brainwash people into giving 10% of their salary to the church. Don't ever ask them to donate church funds to an overseas Missionary. Their too worried about building a bigger fancier church and having a nicer parsonage. But, that's just what I've experienced. There has to be some good born again Christians. If not, then the world might end like the bible story about Lot in the evil city that was destroyed--because there were no good people left anywhere. Anyone can read the bible, you don't have to act SUPERIOR than others if you read it. It's a big story book.

What often gets presented as born-again Christianity in this day and age isn't really all that Christian, at least not in attitude or spirit. It's what I call "Southern-fried Christianity". Really, it's right-wing Republicanism dressed up in a Jesus mask so that gullible yet sincere Christians vote for Reagan, Bush, et al, and unthinkingly support the less-Christian, big-business-butt-kissing Republican positions like shafting the poor and poisoning the environment. Oh, and don't forget the "Southern-fried" racism!
Real Christianity is married to Jesus Christ, not the Republican party.
I believe that Jesus is just as real in the 21st century as he was in the first. I believe that the basics of Christianity don't change--such as Jesus is the Savior, and love your neighbor as yourself--but that the packaging can change to reflect the culture we're trying to reach. It's the same water whether it's poured into an earthen cup, a crystal goblet, or a cardboard Dixiecup. I believe Jesus can be transmitted through rock and roll and rap as well as through a Gregorian chant. I believe you can find Jesus on the Internet as well as on a stained glass window. I believe that delving into the Jesus ocean, you can wade near the shore (kindergarten level), or scuba-dive into the deepest depths (post-doctorate level).
Jesus is relevant anywhere, but not all forms of Christianity are.
BTW, I call myself a born-again Christian, even though I'm definitely not, and hopefully will never be, a right-winged Republican. I call myself born-again, as opposed to a nominal Christian (in name only), because some 27 years ago I submitted myself to an experience where I asked Jesus Christ to come into my life, and he did!

We breath in and we breath out. Our hearts pump blood throughout our bodies. We exist the same way all humans exist.
Where do you come up with the idea that a born again Christian hates their fellow man? That is the antithesis of Christianity.
If you meet a true born again Christian and are willing to study the Word of God, perhaps you wouldn't be so quick to label people.

Everything has a place in this world, and it all also has its time, whether we think it is necessary or not. As long as that philosophy or that concept serves a purpose to make bright the heart of even 1 of its followers it will remain so.
Otherwise, it will eventually fade away naturally like decaying organic matter, if its time is ripe is will flourish, when its time is over it will crack, fizzle and pop with its last shout of fervor then fade away... like a dying flame of a burnt out candle....
Babylon was once a great empire, so was Gengis Khan's, Alexander the Great, Egypt etc etc etc, so many more, yet, when the time came... they could no longer stay that way.

Your stereotype decries my dehumanization and characterization as a subhuman, ladened with no other desire than to ridiucule you in PRIVATE with the other snarling, insipid, craven zombies who eat dead bodies, who you think are Christians.
Your ACCUSATION is stereotypical, inane, and somewhat boring.
In other words, I have enough sins of my own that I don't have time to CONDEMN you......you're really not that important to me or the rest of society. Have a nice day.
